ice fishing safety

I have heard to take a metal pole with you to check for thin ice. I was going to try it this year but am not sure what kind of pole to use and how to use it. Can some one help?

Send the fattest person in your group out first, with a rope attached to him of course. When he gets out a ways have him jump up and down and if he doesn’t fall through then you should be good to go. Leave the rope attached to him though…

An idea I heard of years ago & have tried when venturing out on unknown ice is to get a thin (3" - 4") pole at least 8’ long and straddle it while walking out onto the ice. It’ll keep you on top if your feet break through. 'Course your voice will go up at least an octave for a few days after a breakthrough.

Lmao!
