**Off the subject just a wee bit, but has anyone eaten hot dogs on the ice, after roasting them in front of a catalytic heater, or is that a no-no? ******
I’m not sure if the fumes would make a person wake up in the middle of the night and prevent them from ever fishing in the future?
I have long thought a hot dog and chili wagon on PV on a Saturday morning would be a marvelous idea.
Used to be a guy that sold coffee and hot chocolate but rules for mobile vending probably pushed them away. Sad realy, I would love a cup of joe and a chili dog.
All the catalytic heater is trying to do is convert the burned carbon to CO2 instead of CO and also scrub any of the nitroxides (NOx) out of there, so you don’t get it in the blood if you are in an enclosed area (breathing, not eating). You cook on an open flame, with god knows what coming out of it (especially a camp fire), and eat the dogs all the time. A catalytic heater would be much cleaner than an open propane flame you’d normally cook on, so go ahead and cook 'em and eat.

I have a little backpacking stove that uses propane/butane mixed fuel and it works like a champ.
I usually have a zip-lok omelet in the morning and soup or chili at noon or so. also have a perculator and enjoy hot coffee all day long. I’ve spoiled myself over the past 5 years or so, nothing like when i was a kid. freezing, starving and kneeling or standing all day.
A friend of mine said he saw a catalytic heater last year that was made to lay on its back and work as a stove. he doesn’t remember where.
Thanks everyone … I’ll do a little ice cheffing from now on … The zip lock omelet idea made me hungry.
My brother and I have taken a little propane bbq on the ice for years to grill dogs. A hot lunch on the ice is the only way to go and cooking passes the time if the fishing is slow. Last week at DC a friend cooked us deer steaks and sausage on a frying pan over his heater. Tasty day and fishing was good too.
I got tired of doing all the cooking while everyone was catching fish. It is easier to just take some breakfast burritos and warm them over the heater.
I agree that cooking sucks when the fishing is good and that’s why I do the soup and zip-lock omelets. I have real small pot that only holds 1 1/2 cans of soup. If you’ve never heard of the zip- lock omelet, it’s the easiest thing ever. Take a sandwich size FREEZER bag( freeze bags are thicker and won’t melt) put in two or three eggs, sausage, ham, cheese or what ever you like. Remove the air and mix it all up. Boil water, drop in the bag and wait ten minutes, eat it right out of the bag. YUMMY
