I need help identifying a fish. (pic)

I think it is a white bass but I’ve only caught one white bass before at Utah lake and it was tiny compared to this fish. I thought maybe it could be a hybrid or a striped bass. I caught it on a rapala x-rap jerk bait fishing for bass.

Sorry if the photo ends up being giant.

White bass

I think that’s a pure White Bass (no hybrid)… and a good sized one at that! What did it measure?

White bass. Where did you catch it?

That is just a big white bass.

Nice work. It Looks like a strong contender for the White Bass State Record. That is an awesome catch.

Sevier River drainage or “the Res” @ Delta??

Thanks all for the info.

I didn’t measure the length but it weighed 2 pounds.

I caught it at a pond on a friend’s property. He doesn’t really fish so I’m discovering what’s in there by what bites.

IDK. The record White Bass was 4 lbs. and 1 oz. Even catch and release is 19".

I think it looks like a Wiper! You sure you weren’t at Willard? Or is it one of those shots where you hold it REAL close to the camera . . .:astonished:

That is a nice looking fish. I’ll bet it’s kinda pokey!

Wiper for sure, that is no white bass. It has stripes which don’t connect and are broken. The undeniable mark of a hybrid. White bass are never marked like that. I don’t have time to post compare and contrast pics right now, maybe later.

+1

broken lines = wiper

to be sure, what kind of fish are stocked in the pond you caught it from? That information would be very telling in id’ing your fish.

Wipers from willard, looks the same to me…

Gotta ask the question; Where did your friend get a Wiper?

Seems a bit early for that thing to be milking.

There are no wipers or stripers in Utah Lake, so it has to be a white bass. While they don’t usually get over a pound in Utah, I’ve caught them up to four pounds in other states.

He didn’t catch it at Utah Lake.

The only fish he knows of that were stocked there once is trout, but that was quite a while ago. He doesn’t know anything about white bass, hybrids, or striped bass.

I should clarify one thing. The fish in the picture in my original post I caught a few weeks ago and was not weighed. It was maybe a little smaller than the one I caught yesterday that weighed 2.0. I used that picture for some scale. I’ll include a pic of the one I caught yesterday. I’ll also include a pic of the only white bass I’ve ever caught. That was at UT lake.

It doesn’t matter to me what kind of fish it is, it was fun either way. I was just curious because it seemed big for a white bass but I know hybrids don’t reproduce naturally, right?

They can occur naturally, but most hybrids are sterile. As far as I know, Wipers cannot reproduce. That’s one of the things that makes them such a great fish. Their numbers can be controlled, so they don’t stunt.

They don’t reproduce but they do go through a false spawn and they will expend milt. As mentioned, white bass do not have broken horizontal lines, wipers do.
