Hyrum 5/23

I trolled for trout and did pretty good 10 fish landed and missed a few more. Most fish were 14-17" and FAT with a couple smaller ones. Fish were caught on rapalas and spoons with the triple teaser being the money lure for the day.

Good to hear. Ya did better than I fared a couple weeks back. Pulled in 1 rainbow - about 14". Fat and healthy fish (till he met my club anyway).

Newbie to boating (12’ flat bottom Jon boat, downriggers) as of last summer. And man-o-man is that a whole different lake when full! I enjoyed exploring all the way up to the inlet end, up in the trees. Was hoping to find some pre-spawn bass, but none spotted.
Found an injured baby-perch flopping along…one a bird must have missed.

Did well last fall trolling with pop-gear, Mack’s Kokanee killer’s were our hot lure. But a Panther-Martin rainbow swimbait with a spinner on the front was pretty hot too.

We did see a guy cleaning his load of average rainbows. He opened his cooler to show us the prize - probably 5-6 pounds, 30 inches across (guestimate). It lay diagonal across the length of his 30 gallon cooler.

My son went wild on bass by the cars. Cast and catch. I couldn’t even get a line in, had to keep taking fish off his hook (small largemouths).

I didn’t have any luck by the cars this time. Lots of turbulence over there.

So what are you trolling with - lead line, weights, downriggers? Guess till the water warms at the surfaced - shouldn’t need to get too deep.
I spotted a bunch of schools on the fishfinder by the cliffs past the beach area, but no hits. Several boats anchored along the inlet area. Didn’t seem like folks were catching much.

I’m also a boating newbie I got a 14’ aluminum boat just this spring. 1 ounce of weight seemed to get me to a good depth, I don’t have down riggers yet so I just kind of geuss my depths, I figure 10 feet deep for each ounce of weight added, but that’s just a guess, and there are several variables that come into play.(line, lure, speed)
I have heared from several different people that it’s pretty good fishing by the cars, and in fact I got most of the trout trolling next to them. I did stop and soak a worm and pitch lures for a second but had no luck, I hope to get into some perch or bass there sometime this summer though.

Went out yesterday. Trolled along the west/south sides - but didn’t have any takes. Tooled up into the inlet just to explore. Looked like good bass structure, but no hits. Someone told me you have to bust down into the weeds/ submerged trees/brush - and avoid snags, but then they’ll find ya. Need to try that.

Problem I’ve had with the downrigger there is watching your depth. It’s a great tool for precise presentation, but if you get too far into the inlet area you start hitting the weeds, and I’ve snagged a few lures. Alas. Even lost my dipsy diver in there.

Spotted some schools near the sandy cliffs, and floated and jigged. Got a hit on a white gulp minnow, and he clobbered it! It was halfway down his gullet! Fiesty fat trout I’ll say! He had a 2-3 inch minnow in his belly - maybe a baby rainbow, or a perch. Trolling the same minnows behind spinners/pop gear - did no good. Used a small jig, and hooked him through the middle, swam bent, and injured looking. Sometimes simpler is better!

Ever used lead-core line? I like that it’s colored, so you can know how much you have out. I have one reel with a line-counter. That’s pretty handy too.
