Just wondering if there is a size regulation on the hole through the ice? some numb skull hacked a 2’ hole at the the pumphouse, so pay attention while walking someone is going to fall through!!
I think the biggest you can go is 10 inches in utah, however i think the gorge and bear lake have different regulations. I fell through a land mine (hole) at Pineview, after pulling my drenched foot out i discovered what looked to be 2 -10" holes drilled to make one big hole.
The pump house ice looks like swiss cheese. There are some huge holes in there. There is even a huge square cut out of the middle. Some dude with a chainsaw did that. The bigger misshapen holes were hacked open with an axe. I saw the guys with the axe. dr. veha saw the chainsaw dudes last Saturday. Apparently it took them several minutes to get through the ice. I don’t get it though. It seems like it would be cheaper to get a decent 6-8" hand auger rather than ruining your chainsaw and dumping bar oil into the water…
Somebody PLEASE!!! stop or at least call & report the idiot using the chain saw. I came way too close to losing my life when I fell through a big hole like that. I went clear under & if I hadn’t had my brother in law along to make me keep going on the mile and a half walk back to the car, I wouldn’te here.
Hi Geezer, I agree with you . Someone needs to stop people like that with the chainsaw, I fell through a hole made that same way up to Lost Creek a couple of years ago and if it wasn’t for the friend that was with me at the time I wouldn’t be here to tell this to you now. Come on people , how about using a little COMMON SENSE when out on the ice .
Just remenber the next time you go out ice fishing that it might be you going through the ice and you may not have anyone with you to help with a hole that size.
I didn’t thoroughly read through the Utah guidebooks, but this is what I found.
Page 18 of the 2010 guidebook says that:
“When ice fishing for fish other than cisco, the size of the hole may not exceed 18 inches.”
It looks like they increased it from 12", which is found on page 8 of the 2009 guidebook:
“When you’re fishing through the ice, you may not fish through a hole that’s more than 12 inches wide. The only exceptions are at Bear Lake, Flaming Gorge Reservoir and Fish Lake.”
I never even thought that there would be a restriction on hole size. Now I know and I will keep *DEER on speed dial.
I thought it was always 18 in. except for the select few that you already named. how was the fishing at the pumphouse?
how was the fishing at the pumphouse?
It was bad and you shouldn’t go there. [;)] Nobody but me and the gills. Caught 15+ gills with a couple in the 8-8.5 inch ranger. I was only there for about an hour or so. It was nice having the beeps from the sonar, which kept my mind from thinking about falling in. [crazy]
I was thinking about going for an evening look see at pelican. Hoping that some more bigger fish have moved in to spawn. I am more looking for WB and or Crappie.
That place sucks too you should definitely not go there[;)]
