Hey, new to Utah...catfish advice?

Hey folks, first post…name’s Lyle, I moved out here about 2 months ago and would love some input on where to go for Catfishing here locally, around SLC. I’m wiling to travel but someplace close would be awesome!

My dad and I used to catfish all the time…tomorrow is the first Fathers day without him, I want to go catch some big kitties in his honor, so to speak…

I’m 100% catch and release and a bank fisherman…thanks so much, I really appreciate it!

In exchange, if you ever want advice on anywhere to fish for anything in northern CA, I’m your guy! I miss Clear Lake, amazing place for big Channels…

Hiya!

Utah Lake is around Springville/Provo area, so I’m not sure if you consider that “close”. But it’s rather famous for having catfish, Channel & Muds, and you can catch relatively well from the bank.

We’re supposed to be having a “Catfest” party soon nudges Catfishgitter, so you could try it then!

Oh yeah, and welcome to BFT!

Thanks! Anywhere in particular place to fish there? What baits, time of day? Thanks!

I just realized that I live on the Jordan River, which I’ve heard has some cats in it…any particular bait work there?

If I could make it out tomorrow we’d go out on my boat but unfortunately the wife has me doing honey-do’s…on fathers day. [:/] American fork boat harbor is closer than provo but they charge $6 to get in but there is plenty of shoreline to fish. Look up directions on Mapquest.com or scroll down to Utah Fishing Holes on the Utah Board.
Raw shrimp, Utah chubs, and carp meat work great. You can get chubs and carp at Sportsmans Warehouse. Good luck!

:sunglasses:Welcome aboard. We speak fluent catology here.

I am attaching a couple of PDF file writeups that you may find helpful.

Watch the boards. We have lots of catfish reports. Also, look in the archives for the various waters that produce the most catfish action: Utah Lake, Willard Bay, Jordan River, Bear River and some of the community ponds.

Great info on Utah Lake, thanks for that! Also good info on where to find bait, that is an issue…I picked up some chicken liver at the grocery store since i couldn’t find anything else. thanks for the info, keep it coming, and I’ll definitely scour the forums for info tomorrow while I’m sitting in the office…

I stopped by Willow pond last monday and there were quite a few people catching some nice cats there. It is in Murray so it should be pretty close to you. All of the community ponds get stocked regularly so they are a good bet for ya. Utah lake is a good bet for some bigger fish but as has been said, it is a little bit of a drive from SLC. Good luck.:sunglasses:

Lyle…

Welcome aboard! I too am from Cali and spent a good part of my childhood fishing Clear Lake. Man, do I miss that place!
I used to fish 16-18 hours a day! Got my biggest cat there too…just under 12 pounds. As you can see from previous posts here…there’s lots of places to catch cats around here. Utah Lake will be the most consistent for big kitties. Go git 'em!

Welcome aboard. As long as you are a member of this great site, you shouldn’t have a problem getting all the info you need.
I am not sure where you are from, but I am from the east coast, and the kittie movement and patterns are a bit different than that of the deeper lakes back east.
Anytime you want to go tackle Utah Lake, just PM me and we can try to set something up.
