For those of us who are visually challenged [lol] a head band magnifier might be just the ticket one needs to work with little flies. In fact I wear my reading glasses under neath my head band. Back in 06 I purchased a pair on line for $24.95. Certainly a good price since most places want at least $48.00. Their price is still $24.95. Various magnifications are available depending how close one wants to be from the fly.
That is what I use when I am not using my ring light. It is what I take when I go over to friends house to tie or when i am traveling and take fly tying stuff with me. I like the ring light better even though the visor is more powerful than my ring light. Now a days I have to use my reading glasses with the ring light.
Hi MacFly - The magnification that I got was 2.75@ 6". I like getting close to my work. Some people my find that an uncomfortable distance. I won’t give you all the details but they are available in 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 etc. Will PM you on the site as they are not one of our paid advertisers.
Hey Mac. If you need more magnification, they also have the new head band Hubbell Telescope. It will make even a #32 look like a 20/0 size hook at 6 miles away.
I have a small one light with the flip down magnifier, but the light clips on and off also and is about the size of a nickel. Pretty Kewl. But I guess both set-up will give you hat head
Tool stores such as Harbor Frieght.
Sewing stores.
Hobby stores such as Micheals or Hobby Lobby. Or ones that deal with model cars or planes probably would..
Electrical and electronic stores such as Frys or Radio Shack.
Many don’t carry the various lens but some do. I would believe that Frys would likey carry several different powers. They may carry the visor in only one power but have extra lens in the various diopters that you can buy in addition.
Some fly tying stores carry them - most of them carry the cap mounting ones similar to what FG talks about. They are sexier looking than what DryRod and I have. But then having sexier looking magnifiers would not make me sexier looking except through the magnification of my imagination.
I forget what the magnification is of mine but it is a #4. which may mean it is 4 diopters. They do a fair amount of magnification.
OptiVisor made by Donegan Optical Co. makes the popular model shown above. My favorite fly shop sells them for around $42.00 plus tax =s $45.25. On-line price including $10.99 for shipping is still only $33.75. Various magnifications available. If you have young eyes then this is a moot point.[;)]
… I have tried two different Michales.. one of which I know had them before.. but last I went they did not have them..
…I did not think about the model hobby shops..or frys or radio shack.. thank you for that insight.. now I have a couple of different places I can try and get one locally.. [:)]
Frys would be my first choice, too. Though Harbor Freight might be cheaper.
While at Frys get their hackle pliers. Frys calls them “Mini Test Clips” or “Mini Grabbers”. Look in the area where they have testing instruments. They also work great for holding small flies while you tie it onto your tippet. Also does well for holding flies while you take pictures of them or show them off at a fly tying clinic.
This one is not one of the mini size but one from Radio Shack. I drilled a hole in the side of it and tied part of an old leader onto it. I made a loop with the piece of leader then glued the knot together.
It hangs on a zinger on my vest so that I can hold tiny flies while I tie a tippet to the eye of the fly.
