I call this one green lava. Don’t know if it represents any insect but hey it may just work.

Looks like a winner to me!
Hope so. I’ll take it for a swim the next trip out.

Is it suppose to be LAVA or LARVA?
Well it is lava like coming down the mountain side picking up the essence of the green foliage. The larva of an insect would be too obvious, besides it might have been used already. Cu-dos to you flygoddess for noticing the play on words. Can’t change it now as it has gone to press. lol
I noticed it but did not think to mention it.. but.. I am still curious on the recipe for green lava.. ?? ![]()

I made the shell using green scud back with a heavy coating of - what else Sally Hansen Hard as Nails. The rest is as seen.
Think that I need to come up with a brown or rust colored LAVA fly. Might call it a rust lava larva.
Try saying that three time fast. lol
I replied to this last nite but dont see my post..
.. so I will try again..
is the lava like a size 12 scud hook .. biot tail.. scud material.. beadhead.. is that close?? LOL…

*Perhaps I should have name the fly “Green Popuri”.
*
- The hook is a TMC #14 Caddis 2x
- The bead head is a size 2.8mm
- Pheasant tail biot makes up the tail.
- Built up the body with green dubbing.
- Used Scud Back to make the shell
- Coated shell with Sally Hansens HAN
lol.. love the green lava name.. dont change it… ![]()
I was close.. just missed the dubbing.. and the hook.. LOL.. 4 of 6 aint bad.. or 2 of 6 wrong.. lol (now thats how the padres would look at it
)

okay.. now you got my curiosity going.. with the scud material.. do you wrap that around the dubbing material from the bend of the hook to be back of the beadhead.. or.. do you bring a single strip of it over the top of the dubbing to the back of the beadhead like on a flashback nymph ??
MacFly
I tie it in at the tail then stretching the material, I wind it towards the head. Scud back has a lot of elasticity, so it’s the tiers choice as to how tightly one does the wrapping. The material comes in varies colors which includes clear, then whatever the base color is, it will show through the wrapping. Anyone else use the scud backing material, if so how?
I did a check on the net on scud material and that is part of what lead me to that question.. I had a feeling it was wrap the material, especially after going back and taking a closer look at your GS.. but wanted to be sure.. .![]()

Sorry Mac that I didn’t mention that it comes in ribbon form.
