Great day out on Fish Lake

We headed back down to Fish Lake this morning knowing many of the lower lakes are thawing fast - hoping for at least one more day on the ice. We arrived at 8:30 - it was quite cold and the ice looked great. There were a few camps on the ice (not nearly as many as some weeks back). As we passed, it looked like they were having at least some luck. We decided to go on across to the east side for a little solitude and some exercise. It was not a bad choice. We iced 30 between 2 of us, not as fast as last trip, but plenty fast to keep us interested. 5 were nice rainbows, 1 perch and the rest splake. We kept a few splake for the smoker and the perch for bait. The day was beautiful - down to shirt sleeves by noon. The deck was 18" (a mixture of hard ice and frozen slush and snow). We were pretty lucky as the top stayed frozen for both the walk out and back - amazing with the the warm temps. Desert was listening to BYU bounce the Utes on the way home.

Sure sounds like a great way to spend the day.

Sounds like a great day. I have not been able to make a single trip out this year and it’s looking more and more like I’m not going to get a shot. I’ve typically fished Fish Lake well into March but with the temps this year I’m not sure. If I can make it out next weekend do you think there will still be some ice to get out on?

It will totally depend on temps during the week. It was cold up there in the morning - everything was frozen up solid. But the temps during the day got pretty warm. My best guess would be you have probably got another week, maybe more - you might have some significant slush though if the day temps continue to warm up. Good luck - hope you get your chance - Fish Lake is a beautiful place.

I fished saturday as well! Got on the ice about 7:30 headed to the east side where we fished a month ago with good success. Ice was 16" + The splake where no where to be found. Saw very little fish on the sonar. Most of the fish I saw were on the bottom, w/ a straggler every once and a while at 30-35’. Got a few hits right off the bottom, but could not hook any. My 3 year old boy got bored and impatient, so we headed for the west side around 10:30. Tried another spot for some spake, but they did not want to cooperate. Saw a few more fish on the finder, but no takers. So we moved again into the shallow water for some perch. My 3 year old had a blast. He caught a dozen or so in about 45 minutes. At least the perch wanted to cooperate for us  Had a great day, weather was cold in the morning, but warm and sunny the rest of the day.

i was there on saturday also, we were fishing in about 30’ of water catching all rainbows and a few browns.. it was nice I even took ny shirt off for a little while my GIRLFRIEND told me to put it back on i was scaring the fish! thats the last time she comes with me! we had a great time the ice looks like it may stay for a few more weeks.
