[left]Im4Trout Lady and I decided to head out to the other side of the Oquirrh Mountains.
First time ever at Grantsville Res.
I needed Minnows for the up coming hard water, and she needed to get her weekly fix of fishing. It’s kinda like a drug to her. Only this time it was a little bit of ecstasy for her.
We got around the mountain on I-80, when I figured out the camera was still back home sitting on the computer desk. Well no biggie, right! We’re going to Grantsville resevoir for a few carp minnows, and maybe a couple of 12 - 14 inch rainbows. Not much more to expect from Grantsville right?
Uhhhh huh, sure.
We arrived around 11:00 AM pretty day. Went to the North side ramp and asked a fisherman how it was going, the reply was not a bite all morning. So we decided to head over to the south dock. After I set up the little lady with a treble and some Yellow powerbait. I took a hike around the Southeastern dike with my dog Cherem, I saw some dark moss around the bottom of the ramp where there were some guys fishing, after finding out they did not have a bite all morning long I proceeded to search for those pesky minnow hordes I’ve read about. Seeing absolutely nothing, I came back and started fishing with a bobber and a worm. The Lady caught a nice rainbow, but it got off the hook right at shore.
The couple of cars that were there before us left and another arrived shortly after. Nice older man who regularly comes to the res. as he lives in Grantsville. He told us about all these minnow getters and how fishing with them they were getting Browns out of here. Now I’m a gullable guy some of the time, but when he told me about 8 Lbers being pulled out I guffawed and went back to my minnow search, I mean come on, this is a little resevoir.
Since the guys left that were fishing at the ramp I walked over there and gave a really good look at the dark colored moss below the ramp. I dipped the net and low and behold about 30 minnows in it. Whoo-hooo I hit the jackpot. The gentleman I was talking to before came over and I gave him 5 minnows. He put it on and threw his rig out. Pretty soon he had a 14 inch rainbow and gave it to my wife for the one she lost. Then I gave him a double handful of minnows. His pole dipped again and there was a nice 3lb Brown. Hmmmmm maybe he isn’t full of fish stories…
I ran over to our poles and rigged them up.
After about an hour of going after the minnows I was wet up to my knees and decided to get out of my soaked boots and socks and put on my tennis shoes, which I should have worn getting the minnows. But kids will be kids and I was a pretty big kid having a great time catching all those little guys. It was about 45 degrees and my feet were numb.
The guy said, that was it for him, and said he would be back later when the fishing picked up.
Then the little ladies pole dipped and she reeled it in,not much fight so I thought “Just a bitty bow” She got it close to the bank and I asked if she wanted the net. She just nodded in a trance state. Hmmmm what’s going on with her…
I wandered over to the truck got the net and brought it over to were she was and holy crap. That there is a nice fish. It was then when it decided to start fighting, not liking the looks of the big guy with the net, and decided to go back out to the lake. Lady started reeling and setting less drag finally getting it back in over the net. It was lip hooked. We decided to keep him since it was the first brown trout she has caught. Plus no camera (ya I know, good excuse).
Another vehicle arrived and it was another BFTer looking for the minnows. I gave him a couple of tips. He told me his screen name, but if I don’t write things down I forget easily. SORRY.
The sun started going down about 4:30 without another fish. We had a few hits but those fishies just don’t know how to play right.
It was really cold so we sat in the truck 28 degrees as the light was fading. We started getting hits and reeled in one more bow each.
The older fellow never did come back.
We left at 5:30 and stopped at China Buffet in Tooele for some supper. They do have good chinese food. Although it came to $18.67 for 2.
We got home took photos, cleaned the brown, filleted the rainbows, (ate them with eggs for breakfast this morning) and Bagged up the minnows according to TUBEDUDE’s instructions. (Thank You TD.)
Here are the pics of her 5.5 lber, 23inch Brown Trout which for us is the Fish of the year.
