I for one would like to catch large lake trout 10 years from now. With the increase of people hitting the gorge over the last 5 years, we all need to practice selective harvest. That includes everyone!
You must be an “exception to everyone else” kind of guy!
Chill out, I wasn’t getting on the guy for keeping the fish you can keep one according to the regs.I was just stating my opinion. It was more directed to the one caught at Fishlake becasue there aren’t very many Macks (that size) in there anymore (maybe Fuzzy would disagree with that since he knows that lake pretty well) but when it takes a fish that size 20 plus years to grow why would you want to keep it to eat or put it on your wall when you could have a replica done (which look better anyway).
I honestly wasn’t getting on anyone and wasn’t tryihg to start a debate about catch and release. It was my opinion and if you don’t agree then thats ok but it doesn’t make either one of us right or wrong on this subject.
well no i dont disagree with you at all.. i let most all my fish caught go back realy no mater the size.. i’ll keep some for dinner sometimes or when my buddy that has a smoker is with i’ll talk him into smoking me up some.. other then that i dont keep meny fish.. that said, i still think the big lakers should be let go anything over 8 lbs.. on fish lake any thing over 12 lbs on flaming gorge.. both lakes have plenty of pup lakers in them and thinning some out will not hurt the fisherys one bit.. but the big ones are hard to come by and even harder on fish lake.. but i hold nothing against anyone who hit’s a big one and takes it home with them. some guy’s have fished all there life for a fish like that and want to put it on the wall or what ever.. thats they’er thing and they’er fish to do what ever they want to with it with in the law…
as for the big lakers in fish lake i think there are more in there then some would think. but still it’s not a big lake so there is not a bunch in there..
GoT, not seeing the pics and judging by the thread I’d have to guess this fish in the 40 lb range. I’d take a skin mount over a glass one any day and there is a difference. Some do a very nice job on glass but my experience is that you can’t make a piano out of a box. Do what you will with it because it’s really your choice and most likely the exception to the rule. I can guarantee that if I pick one up in the 50 lb range it’s going on my wall as a skin mount. I’m yet to take a big boy home and my buddy gets pissed when I carefully slip them back into the water but what the heck, it’s my choice. There are lots of people out there catching big fish in numbers and putting them back, and you’ll always have some that get all butt-sore over the few that are killed. Sure, if you’re going to release it hold it gently but if it’s a keeper who the heck cares. Years ago my father and I were on a roll with the tigers at PV, out of 600 a piece we kept one each which is on our walls, sure we were butt-hurt over some of the fish that were killed because we felt everyone should follow our lead but there’ll always be tomorrow. When you mount it and I hope you do, I’d like to see it on this site. Skeet
mtnman, if it were the gentleman that CAUGHT this hog posting, I am with you 100 percent. So, many times, someone is soooo stoked abought their catch, they want to puff out their chest a little, only to have one or two deflate that chest the harsh way. In those cases, the damage is done, then maybe pm the person and explain to them about how to handle a fish, specially in a picture.
BUT, this post is an observation of an Angler that doesn’t post here, so criticism is bound to take over.
This particular post is nothing to get upset about, in my opinion. Just talkin’[;)]
wow beautiful fish, no matter which way u hold it. I would have had it skin mounted myself. All of my fish mounts are skin mounts and I would not have it any other way. I have seen way too many lame ceramic mounts!! Nothing wrong with throwing a trophy up on the wall, just my opinion.
I saw the original post before the mindless chatter apparently caused the fisherman to remove his photo of a magnificent fish.
I assume everyone knows that both Utah and Wyoming regulations allow the retention of one Lake Trout in excess of 28 inches at Flaming Gorge. The regulations were created with the health of the fishery in mind. If the professional fisheries managers of both states agree that limited harvest of trophy Lake Trout is consistent with their management goals, then we should all recognize that some fishermen will choose to keep a trophy fish.
I think catch and release beyond the contraints of the regulations should be a personal choice and we should all respect the decisions made by another fisherman.
I assumed from the way the fish was being held that the fisherman probably decided to retain the large mac and that is certainly within his rights.
I personally share the opinion that large Lake Trout are a treasure and we should carefully consider the need to retain a trophy fish. I don’t think we have any right to judge another fisherman who has made his personal decision.
If I wanted to hear preaching, I would attend a church, not a website that we share to enjoy the sport we love.
This doesn’t have much to do with the original posting but it’s a funny story. I think there are a lot of big macks in fish lake as well… Just hard to catch. I know a guy who does the underwater spear fishing. He went in Fish Lake once and said he’ll never go back. I guess he came face to face with a giant mack and it scared the hell out of him. Then in his attempt to swim back to shore he kept running into them. He got out of the water with his heart nearly pounding out of his chest and refused to get into Fish Lake water again! Now he only goes to the shallow lakes where the fish don’t get big.
Nice fish, I wish you wouldn’t have taken it down. It’s your right to keep that fish and if you chose to then good on you. I think it’s a little rediculous to condemn someone on this sight because they keep a fish. Get over it and congratulate the man on a nice fish. Every time someone mentions keeping a fish here the same group of people have to post on here and try and make the guy feel bad for what is his legal right to do. If you don’t like it I’d say butt out and mind your own business.
