8 or 9 wt.
would that be to heavy for trout and bass

Nah. I have a 5wt for general all around trout fishing, but for steel head and bass you want at least an 8 wt. I have an 8 wt that works well on the Snake throwing big streamers with a sinking line since the 5wt just doesn’t have the back bone for the larger flies. I also use the 8wt at Henry’s for the big boys.
I was going to say a 6 wt., but 8 is cool. I just realized I have three of them …YIKES!
The only one I have used is the BIIx because it feels like a 5 wt. Found out I really needed it for Grass Carp.
But my 6 wt. has caught it’s share of Carp and BIG trout.
For most the TROUT waters, an 8 can be overkill, but oh well, it can still get you fish.
Hey wormsinker, get a 6 weight. That will suit you just fine. Just razzin ya about the wowmsinkew!
I would say a 5/6 wt is the best all around weight. I have had the same one since I was 11 or so and have caught numerous large fish on it, including some pretty decent steelies. I have actually never fished anything larger than my 6 wt so I can’t really compare it to fishing an 8 wt. And you should be just fine on bass as well with the 5/6 wt. I haven’t ever had any problems landing them on mine. Hope this helps a little.
I agree with the 6 weight being enough for Steelhead. I’ve caught LOTS of big Kenai River Reds on my 6 pounder and it worked just fine. Once I even hooked a King and even fought it for a while, before the line broke. A 6 weight will work fine.
thanks for all your help guys i’ll get to shoppin
