I just bought my first little aluminum fishing boat. I am really excited about it. I want to take it out on the water before I get it registered just to see if it is leaking or anything. Is there anywhere near Ogden that I wont get a ticket or anything?

short answer… no. but if you explain and are not out there fishing for hours on end, im sure they would let you slode… yes slode. thats where you fall on your face less then a foot from home plate
and if it were me i would go to pineview, unless you and a buddy can oick it up and carry it, at which point i would go to causey
You can always fill it with water and see if it leaks that way, but if the boat has structure like wood you may not want it getting saturated… IMHO
Make sure you have and use all your safety items and your bill of sale..

So I may be out on a limb, but as far as I understand the law in utah if it doesn’t have a sail or a motor there is no need for registration. So take the motor off and paddle it around. You still need your safety equipment though.
What exactly is the safety equipment? I know obviously life jackets, and an extinguisher, what all will I need to have in my boat?
A shot gun and a 12 pack of beer maybe? Just in case your new investment doesn’t float, you’ll need the suds for your sanity and shot gun to put the boat out of it’s misery.

in a typical aluminum boat you don’t even need a fire extinguisher, nothing to burn. You’ll need your registration if there’s a motor, a whistle, a bail bucket, life jackets for everyone and lights if you plan on being out after dark

All boats do NOT need an extinguisher.

Simply follow the link above. If it has a motor, you will need to register it. Use the boater saftey checklist in that link and go thru them one by one and read the whole page and you will be set.

Aluminum boats are easy take in the back yard put up on a surface so you can see the bottom like saw horses and fill it up with a hose.
Last thing you want to do is be out in the middle of the lake and find a leak.
I owned a 14’ aluminum for several years and got checked every year, they mentioned it but when I showed them that there was nothing to burn they agreed I didn’t need one. Maybe the implementation doesn’t match the written law
I have been checked on the water a few times, and a few more at the docks… never had a problem and it is in writing on the site.
Congrats on the boat. I’m a noob with the boat as well I got mine earlier this year. I’ve loved it.
I’ve found as long as your bilge pump gets more water out than the boat lets in you’re fine. If not then go full speed and take the plug out till all the water drains. If you need other helpful advice just ask.
One more thing to save you time, NEVER say that you just need X to make it the ultimate fishing machine. Whatever it is there’s always something else after that. Knowing that makes boat ownership LESS expensive.
