Fun Day at Pineview

Frozenover and I hit Pineview today. We got there about 7am and left after 6 pm.
We fished on the north side of Cemetary Point in 42 feet of water. Fish were biting early, but not often. About 10:30 the bites came very fast for about an hour and a half and then died way off. Somewhere around 3pm, the bite really picked up and was very steady until we left.
I caught most of mine on wax worms. Perch meat worked early but then they just wouldn’t hit it. Frozenover caught a bunch on perch eyes.
I had my finder zoomed in where it showed 38 to 42 feet of water. As I would drop the bait down, I would stop it at about 38 feet and the fish would come up and hit it. If they didn’t meet it on the way down, I would jig it a couple of times and the fish would come up and hit it.
I ended up with 50 perch and 19 crappie, Frozenover ended up with his 20 crappie and I think he said 34 perch. He did catch some more crappie that went back.
All in all, it was the best day I have had at the view. It was the best my fish finder has worked and it was a lot of fun watching the fish come up to the bait and then hit while I was ready.
At the end of the day, it was starting to get pretty slushy on the ice. We saw some 4 wheelers out there and they seemed to be struggling in the slush.

Sounds like a good day out there. Im headed up there sometime between tuesday and thursday.
What kind of fish finder do you use?

Gotta love hangin out on the ice all day. Great time it sounds like…nice to hear the report. I have yet to hit Cemetary point this year but maybe I otta try there on the next trip.

Any perch and crappie of decent size or a lot of the same ole stuff?

Again, thanks!

I use a Hummingbird 535 that I have set for my pontoon boat and for the ice. With the help of Tudedude and his PVC magic, it works for both.
This type of finder works for me. James has the Marcum flasher that works very well for him.
I have trouble with my finder working at times and I have contacted Hummingbird about getting a transducer that is built for the ice.
I would like to change the configuration so that I can set up quicker and have the screen a little lower to the ice.
Looking at the way the Marcum flasher is set up, showed me the advantages of the set up.

Only two of the crappie had any size to them and those two weren’t that big. Most of the perch were decent and I was suprised at the number of males while I was filleting. Usually I only see one or two males in the bunch, this time there were quite a few.
I would love to find some crappie of the size that UTCATMAN caught last week.
In true, I was just happy to catch some crappie. Most of the time I go up there, I don’t catch any. A couple of the trips I have caught one or two, but not this many.
I really have to give a lot of credit this time to the fish finder working so well. Most of the time I just fish right on the bottom and this time I kept the bait well above the cloud of fish and would watch on the screen as they would come up as I would jig the bait. Both the perch and the crappie would come up about 5 to 6 feet to grab the bait.
It was fun to watch the screen as the bait was dropping in, the bait would be about half way down when the fish would start coming up off the bottom to meet the bait. It was a kick.

:sunglasses:Sounds like a fun trip. Glad you guys kept busy. Even if the fish aren’t big it is better to get bites and keep the hope alive than to sit there all day with an empty screen and a motionless rod.

You guys about ready to rassle some kitties again?

Hey I was there with my son ice fishing there yesterday to. We had a great time with lots of small perch and lots of missed bites to. We watched those 4 wheelers coming and going through that slush to.

We also watch the Sheriff Search and Rescue air boat come out and make a run over towards the port ramp and towards browning point Sure is nice to see how many people are out there training all the time for when good times go bad and people need some help to get out safe. We also had 2 dnr officers come over and check our fishing liscenses to and said some guys had some crappies and some perch to. All in all a great day out on the ice. I cant wait to get back out on the ice again

Pat, James and I going to be on the same shift now with lots of days off and we are more than ready to chase some cats. It has been too long since we had a cat on the line. Hopefully we can get together and find some big ones.

We saw the air boat take off and could hear it off and on. Didn’t know what they were up to.
That is funny, James and I were talking yesterday that we have never been checked up there at PV by the fishcops. We have been checked a number of times by people doing the catch surveys.
We kind of thought maybe it was because they don’t really care about the perch and crappie.
I did have one bite that I am pretty sure was a musky. I could see something on the finder in about 20 foot of water, I dropped the jig down to it and got a bite, what ever it was, was on for about 10 seconds and it was very heavy. The line broke and when I checked the line it was shreaded in a few spots.

I have been fishing in utah for going on 19yrs now and this year is the first year I have every had my fishing liscence checked but have been checked 4 times so far at different lakes.

Before this I have had alot of fish biologist come by and talk to us about our catch and about the zebra mussels and how to take care of washing, drying and filling out your boat certification before you went in the lake and they were all really nice.

Its good to see the dnr guys out checking on things. That way you know they are out there over seeing the hunting and fishing and outdoor activites in utah.

When we were unloading they had the air boat, dive team, snow moblies, and others members, equipment and help there unloading at cemetary point.

Without all these brave men and women to help out in time of need many bad situations would have probably gone worse when trouble has struck in the past, present and future. We should all say a big Thank You to these members and volunteers that help out and donate to the cause when ever we can to. Know matter how care full a person is you never know when something bad can happen and those are the people that will be putting themselves in harms way to help you out.

Dang, we were using wax worms just north of cemetery point in 30-40 feet of water and had 2 bites in 3 hours. I guess we just didn’t know what we were doing.

Fished the North side of Cemetary by the caretaker shack in 30’-50’ depths. Caught a few perch but guess I wasn’t in the right spot. I did have a group on 4-wheelers with lots of kids fish just West of me. Those 4-wheelers were really working to go through the ice. Also saw the airboat playing on the ice. Glad some folks were getting better action. Pretty slushy by noon on Saturday when I left.

Good job out there! how thick was the ice out there and how much slush would you say is on top? thanks for the report, sounds like you guys had a great day on the har deck.

I had luck with the wax worms, James had good luck with perch meat and perch eyes. We did have some long times without a bite. I didn’t move much, James would move from hole to hole, if fish didn’t show on the finder he would move. With finder set up I have it isn’t as easy to move so I stayed on one set of holes all day and would just wait for fish to move through.
For me the biggest reason for catching so many fish, was the finder working so well.
The ice was at least 14 inches thick.

I was right across the way from ya over at Browning in the afternoon. We started out with waxies and then used eyes and flesh once we caught a few perch. All worked just fine, we just had to be quick on the hook set! [;)]

It wasn’t a gangbuster day for us, but it was consistent as groups of fish would come thru. We’d have moved around more, but the ice was so thick, 18"… I really need to get my augar blades sharpened! [:p]

hey bad fish we went out sat overnigh till sunday and the ice is damm thick around 18-19 inch and the slush isnt that bad I have fished in worse some banks are real slushy but most are safe!

Hey Ono wished I would have known you were out there fishing we could have met up with and fished together to. and anyother bfters out there.

Fishing wasnt as fast as I have had in past yrs but sure had a great time with my son catching some perch and hope to get down there one more time before the ice gets to bad.

Thinking about maybe going to Rockport this nezt weekend and use up my bait. Try for some perch and have some fun. What’s your plans? Yes, wished I could’ve seen you out there, I would’ve stayed longer and fished with you.

Hey Ono not sure whats up for this weekend as I got lucky and didnt get scheduled to work this past saturday but this saturday coming up I bet I will be on the list to work saturday so cant make any plans until later in the week.

We were just off the north side of cemetary point and I had my son with me and we had our Eskimo quickflip II green ice shack. It sure wasnt any where as cold as it was the last time my brother and I met up with you fishing the narrows yrs back. Man we still look at those pictures and my brother says I still dont know how I was outside fishing at -35below zero. That was a great day and hopefully someday we can meet up again and do some fishing together again.

Hey Jim, if you make another trip down this way, send me a PM and let me know. I want to get some more of your small jigs. We have had good luck with the small white glow jigs and need to restock, thanks.
