Full Moon

I was just wanting some other input on this subject. How do you feel on fishing when its a full moon?? Does it effect the fish? I know that strawberry is slow on a full moon. Do you think it effects deeper lakes like the gorge?

How do I feel on full moon? Hard to say… like a werewolf would be close to the truth!

Trout and other fish are not voracious eaters… so that leaves us walleye hunters to hunt down those eyes.

You will do well only to fish walleye lakes on full moon. Good luck on becoming a eye addict.[:P]

My cousin and I fish darn near every weekend. Furthermore, we both have day jobs during the week and go to church on Sundays so it is pretty much every Saturday or nothing. Unfortunately, if we chose to not fish during a full moon, that means we don’t fish at all that weekend. Hence, we have gathered a lot of data on this subject. We have found that fishing is really tough for most fish in most lakes…with the exception of Strawberry.
Our best days have come on the full moon there!

Perhaps it is just coincidence, maybe there are other factors that I have overlooked, but we are extremely aware of moon phase every time we go out, and it is discussed between us a lot. We can’t help but be surprised every time we kick butt at Strawberry during a full moon!

By the way, I’ll be at Strawberry on Saturday…it’s a full moon you know!

Also, Paul really does turn into a Werewolf. I’ve seen him.

N.E.T.O. how are you fishing strawberry when you do well?? Bait , lures, Fishing at night or day. I fly fish and ice fish the berry alot but I seem to have a hard time around a full moon. Hope ya do good on Sat.

A full moon can make for some slow fishing at times I have found that later you fish the better it can be at that time, and even at night it can be fun…

.

Personally, I think the moon phase affecting fishing (either good or bad) is wayyyyyy overrated.

If you can get the right bait, in the right place, with the right presentation, you can catch fish.

Sometimes fish are not actively feeding (whether it is a full moon or not) so dragging a night crawler or minnow in front of may not work. But maybe a flashy spinner or crank bait will get you a reaction bite.

I guess the bottom line is that if you are not catching fish on what you are trying, try something else. I just don’t think the moon phase (at least on fresh water) has as much to do with it as people think.

My .02 :sunglasses:

well up at E-lake the bait fishing has slowed down some the last 2 days.. but trolling has been just great for the last 2 days so i guess it depends on what kind of fishing your doing.. [sly]

the lake trout on the gorge dont feed to much at night so the moon does not effect them to very much..

Whatcha been trollin? :sunglasses:

zipfish, flatfish, yozuri’s,spoons and gear and minnow.. [sly]

Nice!

That’s what I mean… if the bait doesn’t work, flashy hard stuff will (usually) :sunglasses:

I think the moon has affects on walleyes more so then other fish. I have fished the full moon and the new moon of june and july for about 7 years in a row. I would fish from about 6:00pm until 8:00am. I always caught more fish at night during the full moon then the new moon. and also during the full moon, when the sun would peek over the mountain the walleyes would move off some where.
and during the new moon the fishing was good up until pretty dark 11:00pm and would pick up again at about 4:30am. all of this info is based on deer creek only, so you can pick and choose.

(You can read it though if you want Cliff! [;)])

Jigging. And most of the time you will never see the fish on the finder as they are so close to the bottom. I can catch fish trolling, casting or jigging there, but my preference and what I do 99% of the time is jigging.
Randy

Do you think it may have something to do with the minnows being attracted to the light or something?

thats possible, I also noticed the perch and bass bite was better in the mornings of the new moon. I do think it affects them in one way or another, or they move. those years I fished DC at night were in a pretty small area, maybe around a 500 yard strip. later chuck

I bet that’s a fun trip!

I guess the point of my post was to counter the idea that fishing dies during the full moon. I have countless people say that they won’t even fish during a full moon. That’s wasted time to me.

As one of my good friends says, “Some fisherman fish the same way, in the same places, with the same things all year round. They catch fish a quarter of the time, and blame their lack of success on things like moon phase, storms, and ‘the fish just ain’t bitin’”. :face_with_tongue:

yea, it’s a super fun trip. we’ve lost more bigger ones then landed.
for “some reason” when they get close to the “light” in my boat they shift gears and burn rubber and gone just like that. I’ve lost 2 hogs, Ken 1, daughter 1, but what a blast it is. later chuck

Doesn’t it always happen that way??? For me, muskies do that all the time!

We need to get out fishin again Chuck! :sunglasses:

I agree with Flycastin. It’s pretty easy to blame the full moon for a skunked fishing trip but the truth is fish have to eat and it’s just a matter of puttting the right thing in front of them. Walleye might be a different story but for trout, just throw everything you have until you get bites.

I am clueless how the full moon affects the fishing, but for some reason I prefer to eat them upon boating during this phase.

Well, I fished Willard today. One small cat andone small wiper. Trolled all the spots that we usually knock them dead in. One week ago, Same place, Same lures same same, Except the moon phase, pretty much full moon last night. Heck I dont know. Those wipers could have fead all night long for all I know. I think it just might make a diffrence.

Just my 2Cents worth.
