An easy way to do it. Thanks TD. I catch all my own minnows here on the river, mostly red sided shiners and a few sucker. I size mine also but have never added the water. I will do from now on. I have thrown freezer burned ones away regularly.
I switched over to this method after you showed me. Every bags come out nice and fresh.
Hey Pat, what is the best way to dispatch the minnows in the field so you don’t get in trouble for moving live minnows? I usually just put them in a bucket without water, but one time I got home and found a couple still flipping even though I thought they were all dead before I left… I wondered about putting Clorox in the water, but figured I’d ruin them by making them smell unnatural… Do you just let them suffocate longer before you move on? With carp I can manually dispatch them since the numbers are low, but I found a bunch of fatheads the other day and didn’t know what was best to do since you can catch them by the hundreds, Not that I love fatheads to fish with since they go soft, but I’ve heard fall crappie like fatheads so I wanted to try it… Anyway I took a few to try it, which I did the manual kill and freeze, but I can’t find fatheads very often so I’d like to package some for other times of the year while I can find a few… at least if I can take care of them so they are good bait later.. Just wondering what the best thing to do is? Hey you usually put salt water on your minnows, will that kill them and condition them at the same time??? Thanks J
Thanks Pat, I guess I need to find a good source of chub minnows since all I know how to find is carp and fatheads… I don’t even know of a location with chub around here anymore. Used to be some in the Logan river, but I haven’t fished it for ever, so I’m not sure if there are any left there or not… I know the chubs you, Shawn and Alan have given to me are always appreciated far more than the carp… Do the sucker minnows ever show up in Bear Lake after the spawn? Just wondering where I could find a different flavor of bait. Thanks Jeff
Thanks Pat, I need to see if Mike knows how to trap them, I know he knows where they spawn…
Lance, some day I need to take a ride with you to see if we can find a spot that’s public that has minnows in it… Used to know several folks that had land along the Malad river when I worked at Thiokol, but not sure they still remember me… Maybe Paul knows where the minnow’s would hang out on that river… maybe if we could find a big culvate with a hole below it, maybe we could find some there… Thanks for the suggestion… Jeff
Thanks Lance and Shawn I’ll check them out… Jeff
Since I got my GoPro camera I have been getting requests for instructional videos on things I have previously done as PDF files. One of those things is how I process and freeze minnows.
**There are a lot of ways to put up minnows for future fishing trips. Some minnowers like to add salt and/or to pre-cut them into fillets or bait pieces. Since I usually catch minnows of several sizes I prefer to just sort them into similar size groups and then freeze them whole…in just enough water to eliminate air bubbles and prevent freezer burn. **
I have been freezing my chub minnows this way for a lot of years and they always come out almost as firm and fresh as when I packaged them…some even as long as 2 years from the freezing. So at least this method works for me…and some of my fishing buddies with whom I occasionally share.
