Maybe Flygoddess can you your Dad her address and he’d take you by to pick up the materials. I understand where you’re dad’s coming from as the internet can be a bad place. But it’s shame when folks want to help and you can accept. Especially on a forum like this one.
You don’t have to worry about giving your address to the Flygoddess. She’s very well know from Island Park to Salt Lake City and surrounding area. She’s also very generous with her materials and vast knowlege and skill as a fly tier and fisherwoman. Do yourself a favor and take her up on her offer. Just do it in the PM area, and you won’t be putting it out there for everyone to see.
Hey Joni. When you comin’ up this way again??
Dryer lint makes good dubbing, particularly if you sort your laundry by colors, you can get some great reds, blues, and greens, tans, and whites.
PS: There are not many on here who wouldn’t send you some materials if you PM’d them. The fly fishers in particular are very generous to enthusiastic beginners. It’s fun to remember how many dead critters I’ve scavenged for fur and feathers to tie whatever I could imagine at the time.
Your dad is right. Internet safety is important. Many of us on here know FlyGoddess and know she is OK, but you should stick with your rule, and let your dad make that judgement.
FlyGoddess is an amazing fly tyer and you can learn a lot from her and many others on here. Something that might help would be if you posted a little more detail on what fly or kind of fly you would like to tie. Then we could help you out on what to use and how to tie it.
Maybe your dad can come up with a neutral address that you can use. Like to your user name but care of a work address, or an adult friend or relative’s address, or some thing like that. If he does, only send that in a private message, don’t post it on the main board.
I live in the boise/kuna area. I would be more than happy to cull through my fly tying stuff and donate some items to a new teenager wanting to learn.
There are many good people here on this page that share lots of information. I will be in and out this weekend doing errands and day trips, clear it with your dad and I will be more than happy to give you some fly tying stuff to help you get started.
We all had to learn at sometime how to tie…as stated in other posts, fly goddess is a great person with tons of knowledge.
Those jigs are 1/8 ounce, so a bit heavy for a fly rod. I do tie 1/64 and 1/80 though, which you can cast on a fly rod.
A few weeks back I was at Cottonwood at CJ and there was a guy there fly fishing. Everyone around him was catching crappie and bass, but he had only brought trout flies and the fish were ignoring him. Felt bad for the guy, so I gave him some of my tiny jigs and he started catching fish. The guy turned to me and said, “You know, I’ve got all these fly tying materials, but I just never got into it. Would you like to have them?” I wasn’t expectinganything in return, but of course I said yes.
Long story short, he gave me a huge box of stuff in exchange for a few jigs. I can use most of it, but stuff like fly hooks, foam, wire and whatnot I have no use for. I was wondering what I was going to do with it, since it didn’t seem right to sell the stuff I got for helping someone out.
TeenFisherman, I also live in the Boise area. If you want the stuff, you’re more than welcome to it. Maybe we can arrange a meeting somewhere this weekend. PM me and wecan work something out.
I haven’t had the good fortune to come across any non-mangled fresh roadkill since I started tying, unfortunately. I have started to look at my pets and wonder how their hair would look on a hook, though!
Cat and dog hair makes great dubbing material. Permanent markers are useful for coloring foam and for changing the color of fur or adding bars or stripes to a baitfish pattern.
Well, that’s good news, because I have two domestic shorthairs. A brown tabby and a gray and white bicolor who is the perfect shade of blue dun. When they’re bad, I threaten to make them into zonkers. [angelic]
I have a Furminator, and right now they are shedding their winter coats like mad. So every time I brush them, I end up with a softball sized wad of underfur per cat. At least they both like it. One would let me furminate her bald if I wanted.
I love this thread! That’s great of ya’ll offering a newbie such helpful tips, and fluff and threads too! I dig the suggestions, have had hunter-coworkers I’ve been milking for quail tails, or pheasant feathers, or coyote tufts… yes, it’s true!
I almost stopped for some porpupine quills once while on the way TO porcupine - cuz it seemed serendipitious. Good thing I wasn’t on the way to Skunk Hollow or some such!
As for odd materials - I dig the many suggestions. Gorrilla glue - just keep it away from dogs/cats!!! I’ve used xmas tinsel for flash, need to raid the dust-bunnies under the cabinets. Grand! I’ve harvested used bits of cat-toys. Plus - the various packing materials for flash. I’d dabbled with dollar store nailpolish for flash, and sticky labels for holgraphic effects.
As for Spinners - it goes a step beyond the fly, but I did tie in some fluff. Bottle caps, blades, beads, fluff, and some glitter. Who knows, just might be wacky enough!
So - can you fly fish with ice-jigs? I nabbed a bunch of fresh pours off Ebay, and colored them up, added some fluff to a few tails, but short of vertical jigging - they won’t go far.
Bluegill I was on top of last week didn’t care. They could be right UNDER the boat, and they were on it.
