I am trying to get into fly tying I got a basic kit with a book. I was wondering if anybody knows of some flies that would be realtively easy for a newbie to tie that I could also use on rivers like the weber, ogden or any small creeks in the salt lake area. thank in advance.
some really easy patterns are: Pheasant tail, zebra midge, San Juan worm, glo bug and wooly bugger. That covers a lot of bases. I’d start tying on #12-#16 hooks except for the zebra midge. tie those in 18 to 22.
The sanjuan is an excellent fly to start with. caddis larva like chamois caddis or larvalace caddis are also easy flys and fish very well. A Brassie is not hard and will do good to imitate midge larva.
Wooly Bugger is the easiest for me to tie. I am no pro, but for me its one of my favorites. Grizzly Hackle, Chenelle, Feather, Hook, and you are go to go..
I am not a true flie tier. You see, when it comes to the Adams, I buy them . I do not have the patience nor the talent to tie them!
