Weather was nice today so I went fly fishing to my
secret spot at the Santa Ynez River.
Got there about 8:30 AM. It was about 38F. A little cold
for a wimp like me but it got warmer fast. About 70F
around noon.
I hiked to my secret pool with my 5wt and giant hopper.
That hopper works good over there. First cast BUM
something nailed it hard. Ok, thats not a green sunfish
for sure. Full bend in my rod. Big jump. Oh YEAH !
Nice smallmouth! Nice fight for about 4 minutes.
The funny thing is that I think its the same one I caught
in that pool like a two weeks ago.[crazy]
Caught couple more nice smaller bass and few greens.
Its just so nice up there and nobody there.
Called it a day about 5:15 and started hiking back to
my car.
Also I did try out my new backpack/vest. That thing
is awesome. I love it.
Hi Peter thanks for your report and picture. Nice smalley. Some day I will have to give the SYR a try. Never been to that body of water. I would imagine that there are some trout waiting for a nice fly to come by, for I hear that the DFG stock the river once the temps start cooling down.
Yes they stock it with trout in winter. But there is a lot of fish all the time if you know where to look. SM bass,
LM bass, green sunfish, huge carp, catfish?
I know that you like to fish for trout only for the most part.
Try bass on da fly. I promise its fun.[;)]
