Just wondering if anyone knows what it would cost to license a motorized float tube with the DMV? I know that a few years that it was a hassle to deal with the agents. Has it gotten any easier? Thanks
**Haven’t had to do it myself but have heard numbers from $27 to $35 for the first year. Also a cost for the tranquilizers and headache remedies after you get through dealing with the folks who don’t know what you are trying to accomplish…or what a float tube or pontoon is. **
**Be sure to have your purchase info and your VIN number from the dashboard of your tube. **
TubeDude is right. It cost me 35 bucks last year, I think the DMV is finally getting it figured out.
My first time around they wanted about $85.00 until I called a friend that worked there. Like TD said, take all your purchase info with you.
I don’t own a tube or toon but it seems to me that if you were to take a photograph or two with you to the DMV, it would be much easier for them to understand just what you are trying to licence.
If it were me trying to deal with the DMV’ers, I would take a picture of my toon sitting on the ground and one with me in it in the water fishing.
But hey, it’s easy for someone like me who don’t own one to sit here and spout out ideas.
Good luck ice_sled.

**Too tame. I would mess with them by showing a picture of me cruising in the fast lane of I-15…at rush hour. **
**Good advice on the pics. **

with your tube strapped to the top of your truck and you in with rods and fish finder ready to go?
I heard some nice ones are being had on I-215 Westbound but I don’t want to hotspot..
I have done it for years as well. Finally sold it to Albino.
To license a Tube is no different than a Pontoon or a small boat. They all cost the same ($37. last I checked)
It is even MORE a pain to license.
I spent one HOUR last week trying to license my pontoon.
I bought the pontoon LAST YEAR, and they wanted a receipt. I have no receipt anymore and what about people with older pontoons, or boats for that matter.
The company that built my boat sent me a bill of sale to take with me…didn’t matter. Called the Company, they tried three times to fax a sales tax receipt…they never got it…THREE TRIES!!!
I ended paying way too much but got an application to get my tax dollars back…we shall see.
My suggestion is, take the tube, the motor tube, the motor and ask for a Supervisor.
After all these years, you would think they could organize this law!
Oh when I had my tube and Float Power, they had my tube as having a 30 hr INBOARD/OUTBOARD…
Good LUCK
Most of this just seams like a waste. What if I want to have two toons and swap the motor back and forth. I guess I would have to license both? It would be better just to license the motor. Why should you have to license it anyway?![]()
TD I bet you can catch some big old fish toonen town the high way during rush hours. You better be carefull, you just might want to strap yourself to the toon just to be safe.[;)]

What truck? I’m talkin’ ‘bout just cruisin’ down the highway in the tube/toon. Course that takes a powerful electric trollin’ motor and a special prop. Also gotta put some skids on the bottom of yer craft to keep it from gettin’ road rash.
SORRY.
I gt my toon registered in Farmington. When I went I took the toon with me but they did not want to see it. I had the paperwork filled out. They wanted a copy of proof of ownership. My toon was purchased in 1995 so no receipt. Just had to write on form why no receipt. Had a total of three forms filled out.
The three forms are:
1. proof of ownership
2. TC661
3. TC162
When I started I emailed the state and they only sent info on the two numbered forms. After reading the forms I took and found the third and filled it out which was a good idea for that was the form they went to first when I registered the toon.
Here is what the email from the state stated:
*"a HIN will need to be assigned by the DMV.
You will need any ownership documents you might have, receipt, etc. if possible
You will need a TC-661 Certificate Of Inspection (motor vehicles and boats) before and after the HIN is assigned.
TC-162 Application For Utah Motor Vehicle Identification Number
TC forms are available online at www.dmv.utah.gov. If you have any way to bring the pontoon into the Utah DMV office they can take care of the inspections for you at the time you are assigned a HIN.
If you have any further questions please feel free to contact our Customer Service Department for further assistance at 1-801-297-7780 or 1-800-368-8824.
Thank you,"*

I will have to go through with it again when I get mamatrouts FC4 registered later this year. The toon cost me $37.50 in August.

On the motor, I could be wrong because it has been a few years, but, back in the regular boat days, you have to license any motor OVER 25 hr.
Anything under no.
Then there was suppose to be a law that any BOAT under 14 feet was a flat $10. plus whatever (you realize you are paying a Road tax with your boat, but I guess you have to get it there)
In fact about two years ago, this was the case. You only needed to prove your motor was under 25 and your boat under 14’ didn’t matter about gas or electric.
That was sweet, but something happened to the simplicity?!!!
Why should you have to license it anyway?![]()
That’s a good question !! I have never seen a Ranger check for tags on pontoons any place. Period !!
I see a lot of folks in violation at Scofied and especially Jordanelle. My thinking is…if they’re not going to enforce the law, how about refund the registration money to the ones that do and lets forget about the whole registration thing…
I have a pontoon but have not licensed it. I live up in Logan and talked to them at the DMV about having it licensed. The figure they told me was somewhere in the ballpark of $100, but they obviously couldn’t picture or understand what I was talking about. My buddy up here had his licensed, and they took him for a little over $100. I think he got ripped off pretty good. Good luck with it, though. Everyone I have talked to about it has also said it’s a hassle.
If it’s an electric motor only it shouldn’t be required to license. I haven’t read the regs but talked to a guy who did get a ticket for having a trolling motor on a toon. They should change the law in my opinion.
That’s for sure!
But it is any motor, and yes I have been checked at Scofield and Jordanelle.
Ticket is hefty from what I understand. You could take your chances.
Allot of people have licensed the boat, but didn’t post them on their boat properly. Suppose to be visible just like a boat, but I have seen the state stickers stuck on the frames and not very visible.
This isn’t just Utah, by the way. As far as I know, any state. You add a motor, you license.
They just need to go back to simplifying it. If you have a 12’ Jon boat or canoe and you put an electric motor, you have to license the BOAT not the motor, so Tubes and Toons should not be exempt.
I do agree that an electric motor (egg beater) is ridiculous, but there are those BIG electric motors. Again a generalization, if one pays, they all pay.
If they made it an easy in and out at the DMV, this would be allot easier to deal with.
You forget that would mess with uncle getting his $$$ and that is just not going to happen. Anything to get a buck especially in this economy.
But it is any motor, and yes I have been checked at Scofield and Jordanelle.
I hope I’m not hi-jacking this thread…but what items were they interested in ?
Life jacket of course, what else ?
Licenses. He could see my boat license which he complimented me on the way I have it displayed and of course fishing license, but they did make note of the plate and motor.
My vest is on the back of my seat so in visual.
I still recommend a compass and a whistle or a horn. An orange flag would be nice at some lakes.
I got checked at Otter Creek on Monday. The fish cop would not let me put the electric on my toon because I didn’t have the registration numbers. I went yesterday to register and the DMV did not have a clue. They sent me home to get a picture, even though I had the toon in my truck. I’m going back right now, wish me luck. Thanks to Flygoddess for the help. If I make it back alive I’ll post up.
