We fished two nights this weekend, the first at Marsh Creek and the second at Holmes Crossing. Friday night at Marsh Creek (ice-12 inches), two of us caught 17 burbot and 3 lakers from about 5:30-8:30pm. We fished from 10-45ft deep, with most of the success coming from jigging in about 35ft of water. Burbot ranged 12-20 inches, and of these, only 2 fish came on shallow tip-ups.
It was slower on Saturday night for us over at Holmes Crossing (ice-12 inches). We iced only 8 burbot and one laker, fishing from about 5:00-8:30pm. We fished depths from 15-50ft, but only caught fish in 25-35ft of water. The fish were also smaller, 12-17 inches. Watch out for some wicked pressure ridges across the South Bay and off to the north across the main channel. Open water is visible and we saw some pretty big slabs of ice falling in. Spooky.
The same techniques are working, glow jigs tipped with sucker, chub, or crayfish, resting or jigging close to the bottom. All our fish were either post-spawn or immature, which may indicate why we did better deeper??? Not sure, but we definitely didn’t do as well in the shallows, compared to last weekend. Hope it helps, Ryno
