There is a discussion in another thread about fishing license fees.
As I understand it, all of the money generated from hunting and fishing licenses are kept within the DNR and not released to the State’s General Fund.
This isn’t enough funding on it’s own so there is also other money from the general fund assed to the budget each year.
With our ecconomy the way that it is, general funds are tight and hard to get for DNR funding.
How do you feel about license fee increases, to keep the services from droping off?
I’m in favor of it, as long as the money collected stayes with the DNR and not put into the general fund.
I thought it was the other way around. As I understand it, the DNR actually turns a profit. Not all state agencies, however, are designed to create revenue. Some are public service entities, so a lot of the profit from the Division goes into the general fund. When the general fund is hurting like it is now, they can limit Division spending, hiring, etc. for the good of the whole state. Obviously, I’m not a book keeper for the state so I don’t know, but I thought that’s how it worked. If that is the case, then if the general fund is hurting, the Division is hurting and may have to raise fees. Anyway, that’s my take. Correct me if I’m wrong.
I agree. While I don’t like having prices on anything go up, the reality is our utah license prices are extremely reasonable for a 365 license.
Cost has gone up on everything else. Fisheries need to be maintained and science needs to be studied. None of that is free.
An increase would be ok with me since I know the money I spend is going back into the management of the wildlife I love.
A fishing license is the one thing I get more than my money out of each year. I would be fine increasing fee’s if the money went back into improving the fisheries.
So 100% of license money goes back into wildlife. And the taxes on tackle, ammo, and pretty much everything allied used to sell goes back into wildlife- 75% from the feds and 25% from the state.
So next time some peta friend says you shouldn’t kill a living animal, you can point out that the only financial support that animal gets is from people like us who contribute to their management, not from people like them, whose money goes to ad campaigns.
Not trying to start a fight. Peta and the nra both serve a purpose but I wont join either.
I would much rather throw my money to Idaho fish and Game than give Utah any more money. However I live very close to the Idaho Border. I will say that Utah has some world class planter rainbow fisheries, probably the best in the world LOL!! I think they have this SCIENCE perfected, time for something new.
**I paid $24 for my Utah license. And, it cost me $120 for my Cali license. I’m here to fish. If there is a will I’ll find a way. I can do without alot of things, and fishin’ ain’t one of them.
