Fish Lake - Report

My wife and I fished 4 days at Fish Lake from our boat. The water level is down and very shallow in the marinas. There was barely enough water to float the big Trophy boat so I almost wished we had taken the smaller boat, but it worked out OK. The weather was fantastic other than a stiff breeze blowing by once in a while that usually only lasted a few minutes. Water temp about 57. We mostly trolled pop gear and worms and often hooked fish as soon as we got to depth, about 6 colors. All rainbows 12 to 14 inches except 1 spake the same size. Pop gear and cranks were not as effective, and I didn’t even try the downrigger since nobody was catching a mack at all. The best trolling is across the lake from the marinas, especially across from Bowery, 105 feet deep, parallel to the shoreline. The bite is short and light so many fish are missed, or hooked but get off near the boat, and there is a lot of bait stolen so take more nightcrawlers than you think you’ll need. The main lodge is closed for the season but the marinas are open, as are Bowery Haven and Lakeside Resort.

Sounds like a good time, i can’t believe you’re hitting bows 105 ft. that’s insane! This is a sub par time of year for fishlake, i’ve made 3 september trips and caught only one mackinaw around 24 inches. October is a lot better for splake, i don’t know about mackinaw and rainbows. Fall is coming, shorter days, football, and big fish to follow!

The macks are in a prespawn mode and usually hard to catch. They spawn around the first of october in fish lake. We have caught some nice macks during the deer hunt and after. gshorthair

Yeah, I didn’t really expect the macks to be in biting mode this early but I took the heavy artillary (downriggers) along just in case. I don’t think I’ll be able to make it back there this year either [frown]. For the record, the water is 105 feet, and we were trolling slow 6 colors out, or 60 yards back with
lead core. Very fast action, but I can’t wait to get back up to Strawberry for some larger fish.
