Fish Lake 1/12/08

Fished Fish Lake today with MGB and Tincanfsh. We caught plenty of fish . Interestingly, we didn’t catch a single perch. Weather was about as good as one can expect ice fishing. A little slush here and there, but really not a problem at all and only about 3 to 4 inches of snow on most of the ice. Mike took honors for largest fish with about a 28" mack (I missed my one really good mack bite). Billy took honors for most fish – he moved in a little shallower for awhile and had non-stop action on the splake and rainbows. I took honors for the most deer killed – two.[:(] Fun day on the ice with good friends – life is good.[:)]

ouch how’s the truck? :astonished:.. good to hear ya had a good time fishing anyway.. i’m looking forword to 3 or 4 days to rome around fishlake. there is so much to fish for there. maybe i’ll run into some of them bigger mack’s for ya and let ya know there they be hideing.. [crazy]

did any of the info i give ya help?

Too bad about the deer Kent. I hope they didn’t do too much damage to your truck. At least the fishin’ was awesome though.

awesome report Kent. i’m headed down to fish lake in two weeks with 4 of my buddies. hope you didn’t catch all of them. just got them warmed up for us.
how thick was the ice. want to take the wheeler down.
thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the report. We will be up there over MLK weekend. Where did you find the macs? Any pictures? Any size to the splake and rainbows?

Where did you nail the deer? Hope there wasn’t too much damage. Thanks again.

Thanks for the trip Kent and thanks to Fuzzy Fisher for some valuable information. The splake was fast catching with a few rainbows caught also. The macks took a little more work. It was my first trip to Fish Lake, I would like to return during the summer and spend the weekend there.

nice fish there my friend! i’m glad you got into them there.. by the pic i know right where you were.. and i thought that area looked good when i was trolling it this last spring. [crazy]. i know were i’m going to start looking tomorow for the mack’s..

great report!

I was fortunate that there was minimal damage to the Suburban (I won’t need to make any repairs). After hitting the brakes and honking the horn (a herd of them were crossing the road in the dark) I hit them going probably about 40 MPH. We fished on the north end and the south end. Mike caught his mack, lost another one and I had my one good bite on the south end in 60’ of water.

Most places the ice was about 5 inches thick.

The largest rainbow was about 17 inches and the largest splake was only about 15 1/2 inches. Hit the deer maybe 5 miles south of the turn-off to Richfield on the way home. I have seen more deer driving to Fish Lake during the winter than driving anywhere else.

Ron, your input was very helpful. We wouldn’t have fished that far south without your input.

Thanks,

Nice Mac… thanks for sharing. I love icefishing that lake. Next trip is after some bigger Macs (this MLK weekend). I did the first trip catching about 50 trout there a few weeks ago. Hard to settle down and concentrate on the Macs sometimes but this weekend it’s big macs or nothing for me!!

Were they responding to jigging on the bottom?

Sorry bout the deer thing. How shallow did you have to go to find the splake? And could a car make it down there right now?

Me and OCF also ventured down to Fish Lake yesterday. Fished on North end. Started in 100 feet of water, slow[unsure],not much showing on the screen (hoping for macs), got impatient and moved towards shore. Spent the rest of the day fishing 20 feet of water. Caught splake and rainbows. The biggest splake was 16 inches. Roads were dry. Snowmobiles were crossing the lake most of the day.

I feel bad that I missed out on the adventure! Were either of the two deer a buck? [;)]

I fished Strawberry on Saturday along with the rest of the wasatch front. I was helping the scouts out. Quite a few fish were caught, but I didn’t get much real fishing time in. I still took big fish honors with a fat 23 incher.
Didn’t make it to Utah Lake with my daughter.

Good job Mike, shoot me pm on how you caught that mack. Ken, when I was reading your post I was imagining driving to Fish Lake in the dark and coming around one of the bends in the canyon and BAM!!! but you hit the deer on the way back? Not a good way to end a trip, was it dark when you were coming back? Glad you guys are ok and no damage to the fishinmobile.

Kent thats a crapper as far as messing up the SUV and the deer. Good on you guys tho’ as far as the catching. Sounds like you had a good day of it.

I’ll be in that area for a couple 3 days this week.
