I hiked up to Round Lake up Oakley canyon in the Uintas and caught a bunch of cutts and grayling. Does anyone know what kind of cutts are up there? Here is a pic of one I caught. the only species of cutt I have’nt caught yet in Utah is the Yellowstone. Could that be it? Thanks for the help.
It looks a lot like a Colorado River cutthroat trout to me. From what I understand, Yellowstones are not stocked in Utah any more. However, there are still some wild populations in the Uintas.
sure looks like a yellowstone to me.. but if ya want to make sure that you catch a yellowstone make a trip up to E-lake and you get one there.. there are a bunch of them there and most day’s willing to hit lure’s, jig’s, or a minnow..
that is a yellowstone cut
I’m not the best at telling Colorado and Yellowstone apart except when the Colorado brightens up a lot more of it’s body around spawning time. I usually rely on where I’m fishing to say what I caught. That said it looks more like a Yellowstone Cutt to me. Spots a little bigger and fewer than on a Colorado cutt.
Here is a Colorado Cut. that I caught up at Sheep Creek…The spots are much smaller…WW
I think those Colorado R. cutts with all that orange/red are the prettiest of all the cutts. Thanks for the pic
Here’s a good identification guide:
