He nailed it, too. The only brook trout is the 1 fish pointing a different direction in the originally posted picture (the bottom fish in the picture below). All others are splake.
The blue halos threw a few people off. Typically, splake don’t get the blue halos, but at this lake they do. So, we have to look at other characteristics. Like tails.
Brook trout have a very square tail. In this next picture (same group of fish, different angle) you can see the brook trout tail next to the splake. There is a significant difference. The splake have a definite fork, although not near as extreme of a fork as a lake trout.
You can also see that the lower jaw and belly have much more black, and the back of the brook trout is much “wormier” than the splake.

If the next game is what lake, Ill guess FishLake, they were caught in November and Fishlake is usually one of the first to ice over hard enough to fish on, plus it has Brooks and Splake. That or Joes Valley. Those are my picks for location. I don’t actually expect the location to be given up…but just in case…
Fish Lake doesn’t freeze until at least Christmas, and wasn’t this season until that week. I’m guessing on the Boulder mountains. From PBH, I’d be willing to bet money it was on the Boulder. Seems like he mentioned getting on the ice during a hunt down there. Joe’s Valley is closed for the month of November.

Great post! I had always thought that the blue halos around the red dots were the “go to” sign to tell brookies from splakes, so I definitely learned something new today.
Now, do you have one for those splakes and pup Macks at fish Lake that sometimes require a second or third look to determine species?
Oh, Chubby and Fishrmn, it definitely wasn’t Fish lake where they came from, but my bet is that they didn’t come from the Boulders either. I would guess farther West.
Navajo Lake (Cedar Mountain) has both brook trout and splake. It is also a lake that is typically frozen around Thanksgivving. Beautiful fish in that lake. Too bad about the breach in the dike. In all likelyhood, Navajo Lake will be nothing more than “Navajo Stream” this summer.
Doggonefish – I’ll find you a laker vs. splake comparison. To distinguish between them, look at both the tails (lake trout have a very deep fork) and spots (lake trout have odd shaped spots, and splake have very round spots). Lay the two fish side-by-side and they are pretty easy to (most of the time) to identify.
Navajo is a gorgeous lake, I spent a lot of time up there during my tenure in Cedar City, didn’t catch a lot of fish from there but rode mtn. bikes and hiked the area a lot. I usually passed it for fishing on my way to Duck Creek for eager planters. Thanks for sharing the pics- they were beautiful fish!
