I wanted to share with you 3 brook trout that we caught on a recent trip. Interestingly, all 3 were caught in the same lake, same area of the lake, and in the same portion of the water column within minutes of each other. I hope you enjoy their beauty and uniqueness as much as I did.
I’ve caught a lot of brook trout and they all look like your first pic. Except three weeks ago I hiked to Ruth Lake and caught a brook that looked like the seond pic. Weird hownmany variations there are…but I guess that goes for a lot of species.
Ya brookies are still pretty fun to catch especially if you hear or see frogs and toss a small frog popper and see them explode on the surface.

#3 isn’t a brook trout. It’s a splake. Note the slightly forked tail, among other distinguishing characteristics.
So, where were you fising?

Nice Uinta Splake you got there gaetzchamp. Its not every weekend that someone posts up a “Uinta Laker” on the board.
As for different patterns in Brookies, that is what makes them so fun, different fish every time.
Moon, East Shingle Creek, Twin pots, Stillwater.

Nice catch, So is it a splake or Mac? It has all the Mac markings. I am going to some lakes in the Wind Rivers that has Mac in them and have been trying to decide how to fish for them. My plan is streamers on sinking fly line trolled from a tube. Think that will work? Also are golden trout similar in behavior to Cutts and brookies so they can be caught top water with flies? I’ve never caught a golden trout before so I’d like to add that species to the list on this trip. Thanks J

Well, I can see how it might be confusing. Especially where you don’t have a lake trout and splake side by side. But, just looking strictly at the tail, it doesn’t have the deep fork that lake trout do.
Knowing the lake that the fish was caught from would help further in identification. Being able to identify what has and what has not been stocked would be a clue as to what the fish is.
my thought is that the fish is most likely just a splake, and that splake are probably stocked in the lake it was caught from.
