Was really bummed. RiverRat and I were goimg to Pelican this week but I woosed out because of the whether. Had a chance of meeting FishSmitty later. Bummer. Soooooo ----- went to Pinevoew Monday and Mantua today. To be honest, I’m glad it turned out this way. Always plan on an annual trip to Pelican but with gas prices, distance and I’m not getting any younger, the local stuff looks better and better, especially if it’s good fishun.
Anyway, spent 3 hrs. at Pineview with the Sparkinator and caught 2 - 16 in. smallies and a breakoff of a decent Tiger. Just can’t hold the Tigers on 6# mono when they go into brush. Caught them all on my standard reaper. Looks promising as things warm up.
Went to Mantua today with the Sparkinator and caught 15 bass in 6 hrs. Nothing of particular size but I was pleasantly surprised for so early, fun. Caught them all on Maniac’s silver/black fleck ice bugs after spliting thier tails.
Looks like rain for Saturday, I hope not. I hope the evil weatherman is wrong. He ruined my plans for Sunday.
Nice fish Leaky. Every pic I see from from Pineview makes me want to go that much more. This stupid job and bills, responsibility, blah, blah, keeps getting in the way [pirate]
Good report ol’ buddy. Glad you found some fishies on a more local level, but I know you are disappointed about getting “weathered out” at Pelican. You probably made a good decision to wait for a better forecast.
**You gotta teach Sparky to use that camera. The fish are purty but the pics would be so much better with your old mug in them too. If nothing else, you should show Sparky how to lip a bass for a photo. **
Did you catch any perch or bluegills on what you were throwing at Mantua?
I have to agree with ya about staying close to home. It has become more and more desirable to fish nearby than spend the time and money to travel. However, every once in awhile it’s nice to venture out and try something new. Thanks for sharing your photo and report. Sure hope this weather passes quickly.
Early in the year you will do better for bluegills with small jigs or just a piece of worm on a hook. But, after the spawn (late May) the larger bluegills start cruisin’ and will hit just about anything.
Here’s a pic of one I got last year on a 3" plastic jig.
Just thought I’d blither a little for everyone - Ya know, I am really blessed (or whatever you can connect with) to be able to have the enjoyment of doing what I do within just a few hours of my home and what’s particularily great is I do it without a $10,000+ bass boat. My float tube cost $90. Even better - about 1/3 were caught from the shore!! No monsters but WOW so the heck what? Not to say I wouldn’t like to get one. [crazy] This is not the only area that you can do this. [:)] What a rewarding experience of the outdoors and the invironment. Man are we lucky here in Utah or what?
Leaky
Thats a nice healthy bass, the short fat tail section, and fat belly is a tell tell sign that its got good geans and plenty of growing room. If a largemouth has a long skinny tail section and is lacking the fat belly its best to harvest because its growth has been stunted for one reason or another so its best to take it out of the gean pool.
