How Finding Fish in Open Water Leads to Better Ice Fishing
I don’t Ice fish. but who does this Kind of mapping?
I have a fishfinder like this
have never fished for kokanee in Dec. at strawberry may need to buy some tire chains and a lot of salt ICE melt
if the weather will let me make some maps and recordings and way points.
may not catch any fish. but have fun getting cold.
Looks first class in preparing for ice fishing by getting choice locations.
I don’t have that advantage. No boat. No automatic mapping software and sonar.
What I do is walk out onto the ice and pick a spot to leave most of my gear and then travel fairly light on foot making lots of holes with my 4-1/2" Nils auger and dropping in the transducer of my MarCum LX-9. If I see fish, then I fish. If I see structure or a change in the bottom that I can’t identify, then I drop in it’s camera and look at it to better learn what the colorful artwork on my screen really means.
If it is a change in the bottom, I’ll make holes to identify the edges of the transition as I look for fish there and note those holes for fishing hole to hole, if I haven’t already started fishing on top of fish holding in a spot.
I know that sounds primitive compared to what the guy in the video does which is rather exotic that can only be beat by the even better sonar of a Los Angeles class nuclear submarine under the ice with the advantages of a galley to cook the fish and a dining area to eat them and then take a nap and wake up to ice fish some more after eating your limit.
