I’ve been using a Rapala fillet knife and sharpen it on a wet stone before every fishing trip. However, I’m not really happy with it. What is your go to fillet knife. There’s got to be a better knife out there. I’m looking at a Dexter 8-inch fillet knife, and they seem to have good reviews. Also, what is a good glove to use while filleting that HOLDS the fish while filleting.
Dexter is what ALL commercial guys use. I like mine, but most of us have gone to electric knives. Mine is an American Angler 110v. Lots of people use cordless, too. I have never needed a glove when using electric - the blade just glides through.
Like the old saying about fishermen goes, the first liar doesn’t stand a chance. ![]()
If you ask 10 fishermen what their favorite filet knife is, you’re likely going to get at least 7 or 8 brands/models to choose from. For me, I’ve been using Bubba knives for about 10 years now. They have never let me down. I have 3 on my boat; two fixed blade and one 4-blade electric set.
My electric is this model:
The two fixed blade models are these:
I also carry this sharpener on the boat for the two fixed blades.
I do 95% of my fish cleaning chores with the electric. The fixed blade knives are used mostly for removing the rib bones from the fillets after they are removed with the electric. WARNING: They are NOT the least expensive knives you can buy, but IMHO, they are worth every penny. The electric set comes with 2 batteries and I have never been left high and dry while filleting fish.
I have had at least 4 other brands of electrics and all of them failed within 5 years. The Bubba is still going strong after at least 10. Good luck with making a choice. ![]()
I love my Dexter. I have problems keeping a hold most knifes and the grip on the Dexter is a bit oversized and grippy. As for the blade it will hold an edge for quit a while. I do only use it only trout and kokanne so I am not going though big rid bones like you would if you were filleting warm water fish.
I was caught in a moment of weakness at a home show and bought a 130$ cutco filet knife and have to admit it’s the best knife I’ve used for filets. Its sharp as a razor and has a lifetime guarantee and free sharpening for life. Probably the last one Ill ever need to buy.
