few from today

Looks like a cutbow to me.

It looks like a cutt-bow; notice the large rectangular dots just up from the tail. Pure rainbows dont have this feature. My guess would be a close look under the gills and you’d see some orange slashes…Per the regs, any cutthroat or fish with cutthroat markings in the slot must be released.

Why keep these big fish anyway? No good to eat. If strawberry had some real regulations, we’d have cutthroats 10 lbs + in a few years.

You have clearly got it dialed in out there. Those big cutts are by far my most favorite fish that swims. There is just something about them.

Why, because when you hook them they give up and swim to the boat  I love fishing Strawberry but those Cutts really have no fight, the 15 inch Bows’ are funner than a 24" inch Cutt…IMO

If you say that 2 more times PBH will chime in…[sly]:laughing:

BTW - Those slot busters are great for the smoker.:sunglasses:

I’m surprised PBH hasn’t popped in here already. I hope he is well. Maybe he got bummed out on the big game hunt draw results.

FWIW, my take on the fish is that it is a rainbow. I’ve seen a good many “pure” bows with spots like this one, but once again, look at the pelvic and anal fins. The top and bottom fish, nice orange fins= cutthroat. The middle fish, grayish/brownish fins= rainbow. These fins also appear to be white tipped as well from the pic=rainbow. Even the coloration is typical of a spawning type rainbow.

Duckdog, did it have basibranchial teeth?

The fish is clearly over 22.0 inches so it’s legal size no matter what you what to believe it is. It’s at least 22.25 inches from the picture and possible longer if he bothered to try to show it’s real size. End of story here. Don’t accuse his group of breaking the law when all the evidence points to a completely legal size fish to keep.
And for you cuttbow claiming people when they did studies on trout from Strawberry with DNA to match up morphology to genetics were there any cuttbows identified?

Disagree; rainbows dont have those kind of rectangular spots at the upper base of the tail, period. That marking is characteristic of a cutthroat trout; has every appearance of a cutt/bow.

Lots of fish you can smoke. I guess I’d rather have the opportunity of catching trophy fish than just making another turd.

I prefer seeing them with the tape measure next to them over Banana fingers holding the fish as close to the lens as you can.
You do great work Dog, no doubt about it.

I think it is a cuttbow as well.

again cutthroat at the 27 inch size are at the end of their life cycle these fish will not get much larger so anyone who says they’re going to reach the 10 pound mark you’re wrong this strain of cuts don’t get very much bigger already had this discussion with my biologist at strawberry or else we would be catching larger than 10 pound cut throat consistently out of that lake

**It must be a couple of years since you last read the special regulations on Strawberry in a CURRENT guide book. The designation of slashes under the jaw has been thrown out. See page 36. Bear Lake cutts sometimes DO NOT have those slashes…and rainbows (pure strain) sometimes do have them.

The original poster is a seasoned veteran of Utah fishing and especially Strawberry. I would never question his identity or size quotes on any fish he posts…especially when only looking at a picture with obviously inexperienced eyes.

dog I’m sorry, the first pic looked like a 21 incher the second pic looked just over 22. i really love strawberry and it bugs me a little that I never see you take any of the smaller fish off that lake, the strawberry regulations asks that everyone voluntarily let all cut throats go. I’ve caught many slot busting cuts up there but never felt the need to keep those fish, with abundant bows and kokanee there is really no need to keep the cuts, but you are within your rights to take em . and you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. but maybe others will think more about letting these large fish stay in a fragilely balanced body of water.chub are still a threat up there. once again I didn’t mean to say you were breaking the law I know you are trying to do what is right I just wish you would reconsider.

Don’t let the fish hugging extremists get to you, keep the awesome pics coming!

He he - he said “anal” heee heee (Beevis/Buttheat)

Seriously folks. IF there is a slot limit that permits fish above a length - where in the HE-double toothpicks do you think there’s value in dissing on someone keeping one over that slot? Cutbow, Cutt, Bow -what have you

Back off a bit. Seriously. Let the guy enjoy a worthy post, and some worthy fish. Keep your nazi-cronyisms to yourself. I’m fed up with this carp of self-policing biz. If you KNOW what you’re talking about - try a PM to share your concern, public flogging should be saved for the “courts” of GAT watchers. Enuf said.

I never said anyone was breaking the law; I simply disagreed with one poster about the genetics of the fish. It appears to be a cuttbow to me and I stand by my comments on that, and on keeping large trout. You may not agree and thats fine. However, I wont be shouted down either. - FYI, Idaho state record cutthroat out of bear lake 19 lbs. Lastly, per the 2014 Fishing regulations, any trout with cutthroat characteristics in the slot is required to be released - not saying this one was in the slot…! Just sayin.

Thanks, and best wishes to all, to each his own as they say. (I’ll choose to ignore the subtle name calling and cyber bullying from others on this post)

i dont mind being call out for keeping a few big fish but i do let most of them go i do say keep them if you want to beacuse the one over that 25 inch mark are not going to be around long any how

this is a picture from last year tho

I am not looking to pick a fight, but you are saying non of these fish will get to the over 30" mark?

no

A rainbow trout

I think it’s a bow but maybe you’re right and it’s a cutbow. A cutbow is a fertile hybrid that can breed with cutts unlike the majority of rainbows in Strawberry that are sterile. It’s clearly over 22 inches. If you support DWR efforts with cutts in there I’d strongly encourage people to keep all cutbows they can legally keep to limit the pollution of the cutthroat’s gene pool. Release it if you must as it’s not on the mandatory kill list but at least strongly consider keeping it if possible.

no

You might want to look at old articles (like last year) on trout taken from Strawberry. There were a few 29" and larger.
