I just thought it would be interesting to see what people’s favorite things to ice fish with are. I am new and it would be helpful to know what the “must have” jigs, lures and baits are. So far I am enjoying the most success with a white ice swedish pimple and a small rat finkee.
i think you will find that every ones favorite is what did well the last few trips and were always looking for that perfect lure you know the one that gives us the edge on the competition, the one that always catches fish day or night and makes it look like we know what we are doing [;)]
personally it seems the best lure is always the one the guy over at the next ice hole has lol
seriously haveing a selection of different colors and sizes are the most important in my opinion
i keep rat finks, paddle bugs, swedish pimples, tube jigs, and my fav forage minnows in silver.
you can never have enough stuff figuring how to get it out on the ice is the problem
i think santa has the answer a sliegh and 8 tiny reindeer.
sounds like u are figuring it out just fine to me just keep experimenting
I too would like to know if I am missing any “must haves” in my arsenal. Here are my must haves:
Genz worms, rat finkies, paddle bugs, and “twirl tail” jigs.
I would throw in a few Foxy Jigs in Chartuse, black and white. They always work for me. Tip everything with Uncle Mikes white floating bait. You will love the results.
Rat finky’s, the Gitzit fish, or ratso’s are usually my go to jig. I really like marabou jigs as well. Try tipping your lure w/ shrimp, it’s treated me well.
1", 1.5", 2", 3", 4" tube jigs in white, pearl, glow, and chartreuse (and all of those colors with black fleck) . Same colors and sizes in curly tails as well.
Jigging spoons (especially TD’s), Kastmastes, Sweedish Pimples.
Ice flies- Most any brand will work, but I like Rat Finky’s and Ratso’s. TD’s glow werms outproduce those most of the time.
I would agree with that analysis. TD’s glo-werms seem to be the best I’ve ever used. Never have I caught a fish on swedish pimple…but this is only my 3rd year on the hard deck.
mose the guy’s that fish with me know tube jig’s of all sizes and colors is what i use.. i got the rat-whatevers and the small jig’s but time and time again the tube out fish’s most everything in my box.. [sly]..
Agree’d, hands down an ugly old tube dropped through an ice hole will usually do the trick. Most of the time, depending on what we’re hunting, a little added sweetener only add to success.
Its said that 90% of fish are caught by 10% of the fishermen. Probably true.
I also believe that 90% of fishing tackle is created to catch fishermen, not fish..
For Utah lake, Sonar blade baits. Blue at night, Pink or green during the day. Three of us fished all night on christmas eve about three years ago and caught 44 walleye, five were in the ten pound range.

Bob, good to see that you are still among the living. What are you tipping your Sonar Blades with, and do you actively jig them?
Hey Kent,
I’m still alive, just don’t fish as much as I used too.
Never have tried tipping a Sonar with anything. Just jig them alot. I’ve caught big browns at Deer Creek inthe fall.
Suspended at fifty or so feet in seventy feet of water.
Caught Walleye at Lake Powell, down sixty feet along Moki Wall. And Walleye, Crappie, White and Largemouth Bass at Utah Lake. I tend to try them out whenever I see fish on the finder, and it’s paid off quite a few times. Almost always have one rigged up, ready to drop. Of course, some folks think I have way too many rods in my boat. Usually eight or nine if I’m alone in the boat. Could use a couple more.

I’m new to Ice fishing too, so I have no idea what I am getting myself into
. I am really exited, but my wife says I can’t go alone, so I have to find some people to go with first.

JAT, you can always hit me up when you want to go fishing. I’ll let you know next time I am heading out on the ice. Maybe can get you into some walleye like in your avatar.[;)]
That would be awesome! If I could catch a walleye I’d be real exited! That is one of my goals this year!
