does any one know about any place with fast action blue gill right now? I don’t care if they are 2" long. I want to take my little boy fishing and lots of blue gill gets kids hook real fast. If I take him trout fishing and get one every half hour he will be done in a few minutes and I will have failed to brain wash him properly.
I know exactly what you mean. Usually Mantua is the spot to take the kids to get them hooked. Thats were my boy loves going. But by the sounds of it Mantua is a little slow right now. If you give it a week or so it should pick up.
thanks. I live in brigham and will do a recon on the blue gill at mantua later this week to see if it has picked up.
Mantua may be your BEST shot at ANY bluegill, but they are not likely to be very active for at least a month. They don’t move off the bottom much until the temps get near 60 or more.
Planter bows in the community ponds are probably the best potential for keeping kids busy for a while.
Part of teaching kids about fishing is teaching them about patience too. Can’t have blistering fast action every time.
I’m not sure where people get the mistaken impression Bluegill are not active it colder water, but FWIW, Pelican is fishing very nicely right now for the 'Gills. Water started off at 48 degrees and warmed to a toasty, er I mean cold 53 over the weekend. The fish weren’t all on the bottom either and they sure seemed pretty active overall. Just find the right spots, with the right lures/flies and a good presentation. The kids would have a blast. Fish on…
You are right. Pelican usually provides good bluegill action in the early season.
However, my response was based upon reasonable (gas price) distance, as requested. And, my experience with Mantua is that the bluegills are very quiet until the water warms up a bit. But, once it gets about 65 they are all over the lake and all over the surface…especially the bitty ones.
Many of our lakes have bluegills, or green sunfish, but not in the numbers to make it worth a special trip.
pelian lake is always great in the spring, are you floating or walking? A great place to find some fast action. I don’t know if it has turned on yet . It is always my first trip, then head up to the Green River for a nice float. Goood luck. jon
Well I guess we’ll just agree to disagree, but if you read your post you did say “BEST” and “ANY” and I guess I missed the part about a “reasonable” distance being a consideration in the original post. Anyway, I didn’t mean for you to have to defend yourself, but if 50 to 100 fish in a day is not worth a “special” trip, then I guess you’re right. [;)]

Never an argument from me about the special qualities of Pelican. It has been one of my favorites since the 70s. And, I have seen it rise and fall with changing water conditions. But, through it all, those lovely bluegills and basses keep on pleasin’.
There was not a mention of distance being a consideration, but most folks don’t like to blow a hundred dollars on gas just to get the kids into some bluegill. For thou and I…it’s only money. Right?
well I do want to teach my kid to fish, but I will wait till June for the water to warm up. 50 Blue gill are not worth 100 dollars in gas and a mad spouse because we were gone all day.
There are some “dedicated” anglers who might suggest that you rethink your values and priorities.
Then again, the lawyers’ motto is “Love is grand. Divorce is ten grand.”
We caught plenty o’ gills and many many delicious bass. Bass were on Chironomids like Rosie O’donnell on a sloppy joe.
I switched to plastics and spinnerbaits and did well;) shhhh… I’m a fly fishing snob remember.
Also, if you carpool it really whittles down the cost. As far as a mad spouse, you should probably question your selection practices when you were interviewing potential wives.
