EC Madness 05/20/07

Catfish77 and I hit East Canyon on our float tubes on Sunday. We started at approximately 9am and fished til dark (long but rewarding day). Throughout the day we nailed a majority of SMBass and Crappie. If I told you how many fish we caught it would probably sound like I was exaggerating so we’ll just leave it at “a vast quantity”. (all of our fish were released)

We fly fished in the shallows (5-10 FT) from our tubes and slayed em. They were keyed in to just about any streamer/whooly bugger we offered with a medium to fast strip. Either sinking or floating line worked, though sinking seemed to produce bigger fish. Catfish77 went through his home made flies of just about any color in an attempt to find something they wouldn’t hit. I don’t believe he found one.

There was toooons of people fishing from the banks. None of them seemed to have much success and we seemed to get dirty looks as we were catching fish in eyeshot from them. We pretty much caught fish throughout the entire channel and other parts of the lake. I dont believe there to be a hot spot on the lake right now. You’re probably going to do alright just about anywhere. (one specific spot seemed better than others)

We kicked pretty far up a little channel and found 20-30 dead stripers that each had the entire one side of their body that had clearly been cut off by a filet knife (Or something of that sort). The bodies were dumped there and left to rot. Does anyone know anything about this? I would have suspected a bucket biologist but the fish were deliberately killed before they were dumped.

Had a similar day on Saturday but less fruitious (I think it was a bit of an off day)… Still lost count though and all went back into the drink too.

Saw people w/ bait on the banks getting good stringers of trout too.

I wonder if the trout were turned off on sunday. We only caught a few between the two of us and devoted a couple hours to it. We talked to a couple other tubers and they were having the same experiences.
