East Canyon 10/4

My wife and I took a trip up to East Canyon today since they had State Parks passes available. I’ve never done all that well fishing up there.

Today we started slow working some bottom bouncers with a worm rig for my wife and I tied on a flig with a minnow. No bites for us. Switch over to some jointed shad rapalas and increasing the trolling speed. Wasn’t long before my wife tied into her personal best fish, a rainbow. I didn’t have a measuring device, and won’t speculate here on the size.

We went a long time before her second fish hooked just as she was pulling line in so we could leave.

No fish for me.

Quail Creek does not hold the same population of Crappie that Pineview does. I used to have a winter home in Washington by Coral Canyon which is about 5 minutes away from Quail Creek. You will have better luck at Sand Hollow for Crappie than Quail Creek and the Bass fishing is better too.

Heck yeah take the boat down. Quail does have Crappie but for better numbers and much less surface area to cover I suggest Gunlock.
I have never caught a crappie at Sand Hollow, plenty of bluegill, but no crappie. Now Bass? Lots of them, many, many, many and some really big ones too. They seem to fish at night for the biggest bass.
I love where you live down there, Red Cliffs is a special place to me. Been a while since I have hiked up past the steps.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have not been to Gunlock. Guess I will have to do some more exploring. I’m back in Utah county right now but going down again over Thanksgiving. I like Red Cliffs as well, just across the highway. Lots of people, I don’t think too many get past the steps. Great area.

Way good info. I have the whole week of Thanksgiving. See what I can find.

Well the wife finally recoperated enough from her surgery and with the warmer weather down south, she moved back to our place near St George. I came down yesterday for a few days (after getting my old blue RAM truck sold). Drove past Quail Creek this morning and started thinking about crappie. A few weeks back WiperH and Obi were talking about crappie in Pineview. So what is the fall trigger that makes the crappie bite turn on? Apparently the bite was on at Pineview then, will that happen down here? Is it worth dragging the boat down next time I am down?
Yeah that was a teaser above, no I am not moving down here - I will go back and forth as before. Yes I bought a new blue RAM so I am not without means to pull the boat. But mostly I want to know about the crappie down here. Is it worth chasing?
