E-lake on free fishing day..

tommy asked if we could go camping up to E-Lake for the weekend when i got home from Minnasoata.. well i tryed once again the get the big truck running friday with no luck again.. so no camping in the camper.. i don’t want to go up and freeze all night in a tent so i told him we could go up for the day and fish.. he was a little disapointed but ok with it.. lol
we got up there to see more pepole there than i think i have ever seen during a non-Holloday weekend.. word must be getting out on this place..

will we got the boat in the water ran down by Burnout canyon and ran into Shawn BFT’ER (PrinceFisher) and Son and his friend that wanted to see if a year fishing license was worth the money.. lol

good to finley meet ya Shawn. sounded like you guy were doing good for the first part of the day.. hope ya cleaned up on them up there!

well i ran down to cox canyon and started to troll for them.. tommy again cought the first fish. on his squid and slingblade tipped with a worm. i was hitting them good on the Yo-zuri pin-minnow. all was good tell about 3:00 then my trolling motor started actting up like it was a plug. could not get it to run right again the rest of the trip.. so i went in the back of Cox Canyon and tommy took a hike up to the old mine and checked out all the fun places to hide.. i cought about 6 or 7 fish throwing a tube jig around the inlet there.. there were soooooooo meny minnows up in there it was sick! if i would have taken my cast net i could have filled a 5 gal buckit up with them in no time.. lol
well no big fat ones this time just a bunch of E-lakes cutt’s..

no i did not get any fishing in there.. wish i could have tho.. i was only 100 yards from a park on the upper missisippi river.. i did on lunch brake go and talk to some of the GOB’s that were fishing tho.. they had cought some nice pike and smalley’s.. but they were after walleye.. lol

You seem to fish up there a lot, back in the 70’s I fished up there some and one thing that I remember is watching deer swim across the narrows this seemed to happen alot have you seen it or does it still happen???

i do rember seeing them do that in the 70’s and early 80’s when the lake was new.. but have not seen Deer do that for a while now tho.. i did see a black bear up there a year or two ago and allways see some elk and deer there as well..

It was fun to watch them do that we would follow them in the boat and watch the wild look in there eyes…

And the old mine when the water got low was nice too and for a time we would get BIG bows on flys just as the sun was going down some 5 to 7 LB fun times…

Hey Ron,

Nice to finally meet you in person. You are one dang nice guy. I believe it was about three years ago when I first asked for some Electric Lake fishing advice from you. Your kindly offered suggestions have been working for me ever since. I remember fishing Electric Lake as a lad, some 20 years ago when friends and I used to make the trip up from Spanish Fork occasionally, but I’d forgotten what worked there. Let’s just say I needed some coaching.

Let’s also just say that minnows are the key. Around that spring where we chatted for awhile, the three of us earlier in the morning managed to catch about 10 cutthroat and one nice rainbow – all on minnows. The fish we brought to the boat were the biggest my coworker has ever caught. (I believe he’s only caught one or two finless, pale, miniscule hatchery pet fish his entire life!) He described the day as “definitely a blast.” I’m glad we got him into some fish.

My son caught over 50 fish. But they were tiny. Minnow-tiny. I don’t know what the secret is with using a minnow trap, but mine is essentially worthless. I have the black tubular kind, purchased from Sportsman’s. I’ve tried it near the shore, out from shore, and never can I get more than a couple minnows in it at a time. I’ve tried all kinds of bait, from bread to cookies to donuts.

We still brought home a few dozen minnows, however. Seeing tons and tons of minnows below our boat as we fished, I rigged one of our poles with a bright hook, put some weight on it, and for about an hour my son proceeded to catch minnow after minnow. By dropping the hook rapidly and then jigging it, the little minnows would attack the shiny golden hook, and my son quickly became very skilled at hooking one one nearly every drop of the hook. (I believe he thought that was funner than catching the larger cutts and bows.)

I propose that the name of Electric Lake be changed to Supermodel Lake. Why? Because just about every fish we caught on Saturday (and have caught over the years) was drop-dead beautiful, quite tall (long), and woefully skinny. We only caught one cutt that was truly porky, and the big bow we caught was quite girthy. All of the rest of the cutts, while quite healthy looking, were the typical skinny E. Lake cutts. Couldn’t beat the makeup they were wearing, however. Gorgeous as always they were.
