Hallelujah! The DWR has now been able to find a Nebraska source of VHS free juvenile muskies. They are now being raised in the new LeeKay warmwater hatchery. In 3 years or so they will be ready to crossbreed with the Northern Pike. Also, about 15,000 (did I hear that right?) tiger muskies are being shipped in and will be divided up and stocked in the coming weeks!
Still good info! I think they should have Tigers in about half the lakes in Utah instead of wasting time with Slimers. If Utah waters were more balanced with species of fish a lot more people would go! That means more money for all the stores and licenses to the state.
Yes but we are Utah. Its much different here. We dont have any lakes, we have reservoirs that fluctuate in level 30-50 feet throughout the year! Way better than stable lakes.
DWR likes their trout. Let them have them. I’ll keep blowing too much money going to places like Canada and Minnesota if Utah doesnt want it.
There’s a lot more to what fish are where than most of you are taking into account. I like fishing for Tiger Muskie. I like fishing for Pike. Been fishing in Minn. many times along with Canada etc. Grew up on the shores of Lake Eire- but you can’t just slap TM’s in where ever you want.
There’s a lot of people back east and in the midwest that die to come out here and fish for our trout. It’s easy to say the DWR is doing this because they only like trout. Sorry just think there’s more to it than that. I have beefs with the DWR on some things but I feel they are doing what they can to try and satisfy everyone.
I have to agree with you. When I moved to Utah from Connecticut, I was blown away by the quality of the trout fishing. I used to fish the streams hard and maybe catch a few trout on average, but out here, I’ve had numerous days of catching 100+ fish. The warm water fishing is still quite good in my opinion. I think that overall the DWR has done a pretty good job balancing things. I like that I can go run down to Newton and catch some nice largemouth and tiger muskie, and then I can drive a little further and fly fish a pretty mountain stream for wild cutthroat. Not to mention the big catfish and walleye that live in between. There are a lot of options for a fisherman here.

Isn’t that in our best interest to maybe avoid this from happening? Nothing kills fishing success more than pressure from anglers. The DWR can only do so much.

Not true- maybe that could read" nothing kills enjoyable fishing that tons of people in one location"
But in reality many waters actually produce better when there is anglers fishing it and many warm water species actually have to have this or they will implode.
Now me, being the anti-social Bas%$# that I am, either pick the "off " times to hit more popular places or spend time at those less pressured areas that took me many moons to find.
why do you think tiger muskie would not be good for JV? i have fished JV alot the last 5 years.. the big problem with it is to much food in there for the splake.. the muskie will help with that a lot.. when they are done the dwr will stop stocking them and it will go back to being a slimer lake.. i think it would be a great fit for JV..
BTW they have tryed the tiger trout in there with out much to show for it so far! [:/]. 3 years of planting them very little of them being caught! [crazy]..

Agreed…Trust me I think the DWR and Drew in particular are doing a fantastic job. I was mearly pointing out that It would be nice to have more of a balanced effort from the state in species of fish they manage.
I’m not saying to put Tiger Muskies in every pond in the state, but not everyone likes to troll, drown Powerbait or fly fish.
Lots of us spend thousands more on fishing lures, licenses, tournament fees etc and would like to see our money put toward fish OTHER than slimers.

I couldnt agree more! Thats why i said more of a balance all over. Look at the millions they have spent of Strawberry to make the trout guys happy and the number of large fish has hit the toliet. Plus if idiots would stop taking live trash minnows to use for bait and ruining lakes.
Yes we live in a desert which makes stable lakes very hard to accomplish, but there are several species of fish that can benefit off of each other and do very well together.
Utah has come a looooong ways in the 30 years I’ve lived here in the way they manage our fisheries. I think the community ponds for kids and the less active people was one of the best things they could have done.
I commend Drew and the DWR for getting us a warm water hatchery finally! Anyone who has caught a huge TMuskie knows that there is no comparison to a trout hehehe…
