Check your leader for nicks and cuts. With a cotton ball. Wrap the cotton ball around the leader pull through
Will show minute fibers on any nicks or cuts
Also works good on older lines left in storage on the old spools from a prior season

That works good for checking for nicks in your rod guides too! Pull a little cotton through each one, and any little nick will show up.
