Dogs on ice

It can be very simple. And I think you will progress very fast. I don’t get up that way much in the winter although I really want to try Ice fishing D and C.
I will definitely be there in April at IF for the fly tying expo. For the weekend.

well I go to ogden ocasionly to visit my brother and sister inlaw… Which he is also interested in learning the fly as well he posts on this site as well mattpeace is his screen name.. You know one of my goals in life is to catch a 50+ inch tiger muskie on a fly… Just because it looks like an absolute blast…

Don,

Wow this post is going many directions, but you mentioned one very important item; kids are the future! If any of you have not read Last Child in the Woods, by Norman Louv I would recommend it to any outdoor enthusiast. I agree kids need to be fishing, hiking, climbing, tubing, and snowboarding ect. I teach a field class in the spring and fall at a junior high school where I take 34 teens of 13/14 years old from anywhere from Yellowstone NP (volcanic studies) to the South Fork to do water studies using bioindicators. It amazes me how few places teens have not been in their own backyards, what even surprises me more is they never whine about their experiences with me they indeed love them, and in turn many of them drag their parents out to see the study sites.

Sadly the latest data is supporting this concept of nature deficit disorder. We all know license sales have decreased in the last few years pertaining to younger fishermen. I have talked with Greg Losinski of Idaho Fish & Game on a few occasions, and him and others form across the state have gone out of there way to develop free fishing opportunities for classrooms, scout groups ect, with various concepts like Hooked on Fish; Not Drugs! Bottom line kids need to be fishing, and it is very nice of you to offer your lines to them. If you see a new family out on the ice it is cool to invite them over after or even before you reach a koke limit; if the kids get excited they will probably be back dragging the parents.

Well before you all think I am just a sappy peaceful guy; I will be the first to admit that not every kid belongs on the ice. You always read about my son and I reports; he loves fishing and he will probably fish his entire life. I do, however, have a beautiful brown eyed daughter that has no business on the ice, because she hates it! I have put her in three goose down coats, three pairs of sweats topped with snow pants, two pairs of Smartwool socks, and put her feet in fashionable pink Sorel boots, and she still finds a way to get cold on a 40* afternoon causing a scene on the ice. As a favor to all of you I keep her home with a fine Barbie collection  With this all said I think the coolest moments are when that 2-3 year old reals in that first fish and us die hards with kids remember this event just as many important ones.

In conclusion, we need the kids out there and yes it would be nice to see them under control, but let them be kids.

Best,

OvidCreek

I’m no ice fisherman. I’ve done it a few times but haven’t been bitten by the bug. Too much gear for me I guess. I’m one of those fly fishing “snobs” mentioned earlier. I have one ice fishing/dog related story, but no firm opinion on the subject, other than people should be responsible for their kids and dogs.
A friend took me ice fishing at Clark Canyon res. on really windy day. Did I mention “really windy”? I had a pair of Thinsulate gloves, and I dropped one of them. The wind started moving it in the direction of Montana’s nether regions, with me in not-so-hot pursuit. I saw that it was going to blow right past some folks who’d driven a pickup onto the ice. I hollered to try to get them to intercept it, but they didn’t catch on in time. I waved them off, and started to trudge back to our setup, when my buddy started waving for me to turn around. The guy in the pick-up had gotten his black Lab out of the camper shell on his truck, and sent it after the glove, which he chased down and retrieved in short order. I was sure glad to see that pooch on that particular day. He was well trained and well controlled, and saved me a bit of misery as well as an expensive glove.

The worst part about this whole episode is that the people with the dog also had one or two small children, one of the kids was going, in my opinion too close to the open water also, which made for a very tense afternoon of fishing wondering if I was going to be part of a rescue. The e dog was actually the best behaved one of the group.

Ovid Creek,

Well said, Well done!

First off…ITS ALL ABOUT BEING A SNOB [:p]

On the dog and fishing topic. Obedience is the key, like anything with a dog if its trained well… always welcome. If not leave it at home.

I fish often with my pops, he has a 4yr old Chessie that I have helped to train and she is dynomite on waterfowl. But she loves to go in after fish, comes from taking her fishing from the time she was a pup, she sees something in the water and she thinks her job is to snatch it up. Can be frusturating when in the boat and she decides its game on [crazy] I know when in the conditions described by the OP I wouldnt bother taking her out for the day as she is fearless of water/ice combo and would get herself into trouble at some point.

When conditions are sketchy… as the older educated people in the situation we need to maybe pull the plug for kids/pets. Just my 2 pennies. I know when we snowmobile and the conditions get bad we are extremely selective of who and where we go cause its only fun if everyone comes home in one peace.[;)]

I love dogs. They are the best friend a person can have. I just wish I could hook up what they leave behind. I mean wow. I do not mind it on the ice. I think planted fish will eat. But, where I park my truck. Thank goodness it will be gone by spring. ; )

Idaho

Like you said, Mans best friend, which means part of the family/domestic. Would you leave a child or baby’s poop on the ice…or maybe even an adult! No, it is litter.

Would you let your dog poop in someones yard and leave it?

This isn’t directed at you Idaho, you are just the last post.

A neighbor up the street has a couple of dogs. He walks and doesn’t clean up after them. Just recently found out, the dogs have worms!!!
People can step in this, other dogs/cats!!!

I was trolling Ririe last spring and when I got back to the dock, there were 2 couples in their mid twenties or so fishing off the dock. They had a pitbull tied to the aluminum ramp handles that spans the gap right at the start of the dock (if you could picture that).

Anyways, I had two nephews with me (10 and 11) so I told them to stay in the boat and under no circumstances go near the dog. As I walked up the dock I asked the kid to move his dog, he said “oh she’s harmless”. As I got closer the dog snarled at me and made a move towards me. Now keep in mind, I either have to walk in the water around the dog or walk right past it on the 2 ft wide ramp. I calmly drew my XDM on the pup and asked the kid "am I going to have to shoot your dog or are you going to put her in your car? He politely removed her from the dock.

I know this is dramatic but I was a little hypersensitive after reading about all the pitbull attacks prior to the trip, and the fact that I had two little kids with me increased my agitation.

That being said, I love friendly dogs on the ice and I don’t mind whatsoever if a friendly dog stops by and visits, not one bit.

edited: PS, not only this drama but they were parked on the good side of the ramp right at the water.

It is hard to not flame the crap out of you, but i will hold back.

Like there are numerous stories in the paper each day?
come on, a pit bull is just a dog. Don’t believe all the crap you read.
I live right here in IF and I haven’t read of a pitbull attack in yrs.
I have had pitbulls as FAMILY pets for more than 30 years, and they have been absolutly wonderful.
I currently have a 80 pound male that would probably make YOU pee in your pants. But if you looked past your media induced fear you would meet 80 pounds of love muscle that wants nothing more than a kind word and a scratch behind the ear.
Now with that said, you wouldn’t find me on the end of the dock at Ririe, or anywhere near the dock with my dog.
(Mostly because of idiots that don’t know anything other than what they read in the paper) I tend to take my dog only to very out of the way places, to protect him from gun toting inbreds with itchy triger fingers that think they need to pack fire arms with them to places with tons of people and kids out having fun in the sun.

My nieces brother in law moved in with her and her hubby plus her yellow lab and Husky. He had a Pit Bull, note I said HAD. All got along fine but one day out of the blue, the Pit Bull went postal. No Media hype, but fact. The dogs were all loved, fed and played with the same.

Allot of it comes out just like the Doberman thing in the past. Just that if a PB bites, it is going to do some major damage, and for you to say yours will never bite some one, well, I hope you are right, but I am not going to test that fact with ANY dog. And yes I am a dog owner and have been most my life.

i would agree you have to take each dog on a case by case basis. this is coming from someone who had to get six stitches in his arm from a " loving, non agressive " rotwiller. but the gun toting inbred thing riles me…i don’t need anyones permision to carry anywhere i go. and quite frankly don’t care if you or anyone else cares. it’s kind of like you and your pit bulls they both have the" potential " to cause harm but won’t. i see nothing wrong with mt. home brandishing his sidearm. he didn’t shoot the dog he just did what most people wouldn’t do ,protect himself and his children from harm. anyone that would dock up with a vicious dog where it is obvious people will be docking there boat is a idiot and asking for trouble.

by the way the fishing through boise is very slow.. went out sunday and got froze and skunked.

I own a butt load of guns and hunt everything with fur and feathers. I support your right to carry.
I also support the right to say that packing while fishing ririe and brandishing a gun because of a TIED up “vicious” as you embellished dog is just plain stupid and potentially more dangerous than the damn dog.
I would call the sheriff immediately.
Now if you are in an area that has grizzly bear I could see a need to carry.
You NEVER pull a gun unless you intend to use it, firing a gun at the ririe boat dock because of a tied up dog is beyond reckless.
I go there with my friends and family and some idiot pulling a gun because of a TIED up let me stress that again…TIED up dog seems like a much bigger issue than the dog.

since the dog was tied to the dock and mt. home had to walk into the area of the dog was he to swim to his truck ? i will TOTALLY agree that you draw a firearm you should be using it. no question. i am glad the firearm wasn’t discharged however. so your answer is to let mt. home and his kids walk by a dog snarling at them in harms way and you are o.k. with that ? and so what for packing whille fishing i do it everytime i go around kids , elderly, everyone. you have nothing to fear. i enjoy shooting if the fishing is slow if it is in a safe area with a backstop or i enjoy the expression for my 2nd amendment right to carry as well. if the dog was on a leash and i had several feet to pass buy snarling slobering mad it would be fine if the distance was only a couple of feet which i would believe was the case here the person bringing there dog to the end of the dock and tying it to the dock within biting distance is just asking for trouble and in this case he found it.

The folks with the dog should not have been fishing from the dock, no question about it. Let alone having the dog tied up right in the way. Rude as heck and a nuisance, but in no way life threatening.

The thing to do is ask them to do something with the dog.
The dog was in no way an immediate threat if it was tied up.

Pulling a gun at that particular boat dock is reckless in the extreme. I know that place well. You mention the second amendment, that is why I take the stance I am taking. Drawing a gun because of a tied up dog at the boat dock at Ririe is exactly the kind of stuff the gun haters love. I will go to the mat to protect MY second amendment right! If that means calling out somebody for being stupid… so be it.

I can think of several ways I would have handled that situation, First I would talk to the people, if they refused or were jerks, I would go to the other dock. Last time I was there they had a couple.
If that were not an option I would use something a little less dangerous to other people in the area, maybe a boat oar, or something along those lines upside the dog, and dog owners head.
Point is no need to pull a gun unless you in extreme immediate life threatening danger. A tied up dog growling at you doesn’t qualify.

Lets either get right back to the topic of the thread which is “dogs on ice” or this one will be locked.

Somehow we have gone from dogs on ice to the temperments of rot weillers and pit bulls, to concealed weapons and 2nd Amendment rights.

Nothing wrong with those topics, but if there not fishing related talk about them on the off topic board.

Thanks
Windriver

yeah, that’s why I didn’t respond [;)]

probly should just close this post!!! As there isn’t anything more need be said it’s all been said… And then some.. Most of it just repeats in different words… And as far as the dog thing goes there are no bad dogs… Just bad owners… I’ve had a dog tthat was a pain in the rear had to get rid of him because he went nuts… And it was my fault for lack of attention… I shouldn’t have had a dog at that poin in time in my life.. Was to bussy for one.. Any way it’s not the dog it’s the owner… Don’t be a jerk and let your dogs do as they please … Not you windriver… Not any one inparticuler… Just saying… And to pull a gun is down right retarded… I carry a gun with me fishing because I have came across some wildlife that is truley a threat… Mtn lions wolves, moose ect… Not a tied up dog… Never used the gun while fishing… Never drawn it nothing… I’ve been asked about it and when reason explaind they say oh understandable… But yeah poop on any wjere from any thing weather it be human or dog sure is gross to come across.. And I understande it happens at times… And if it does do somthing about it.. Don’t just leave it there for every one to see it isn’t a trophy…
