I have never heard anyone catching trout, well maybe tigers, on rattle traps.
Anyone got a fish story to tell?

**Oh yeah, trap type baits work for everything. The browns at Jordanelle love the. We throw them for pike, cutthroats, walleye, wipers, and bass. I don’t leave home without them.

I have used the Rattle Trap at Flaming Gorge and had good luck. Was using the blue and silver color. I caught 4 fat rainbows with it. So they do catch trout.
Wow! I did not expect they would work. Little do I know…![]()
I second Flaming Gorge, those bows up there seem to like them better than the bass on some days.
Any lure works for any fish but there are some lures that are better tailored to certain species for different reasons. Rattle Traps are good lures and I have caught several different species on them. I think they are great search lures but, in my experience, they mostly work well when the fish are feeding heavily at dawn and dusk. It really depends on the forage base more then the appeal of the lure. If you want a lure that will represent the forage base then it takes some research to figure out which lures will put the odds in your favor. You also need to know what species you are targeting specifically to discern which lures will produce in different seasons. If I had to go with one lure to bust fish my first choice would be Rapalas in a standard silver color. These can be bought in a variety of sizes and styles which inadvertently match forage fish of all kinds with a much more natural presentation then a rattling, painted bomb… which can actually deter the bite. Rattle Traps will catch anything if you know when and how to apply them but Rapalas outshine them ten to one in most situations.

+1 Fall at strawberry is a ton of fun with them.
Several years ago, I used to catch trout at Strawberry all the time on ratttle traps.
They sure do
They most certainly do. Chrome/black and chrome/blue at Jordanelle and strawberry. In fact, I’ve caught nearly as many trout on lipless cranks as I have smallies at Jordanelle.
The big cutts at Strawberry love the 1/4 oz. chrome/blue Rat-L-Trap. I cut off one hook point and bend down the barbs on the others, let it sink deep and slow roll it in.
