Deep sea fishing in Maine w/ pics

My wife and I had the privilege of going on vacation out to Boston and Maine. Aside from staying with an old mission buddy, visiting Harvard, MIT, and Paul Reveres grave, we also got to go sailing on the Charles River. But most importantly we got to go deep sea fishing in Ogunquit Maine. I highly recommend going to that little sea side town, we would have loved to spend more time there. Oh and the Maine lobster was awesome!

Anyways we booked a charter with Bunny Clark out of Ogunquit which only set us back $150 for two for a full day of fishing! All the gear was included, and you don’t need a fishing license either. We headed out 15 miles off shore which took us about two hours and began the adventure.

We dropped our lines in and not two minutes later my wife was “paying her dues” off the side of the boat. This continued the whole time, so needless to say she didn’t get any fishing in. I too felt pretty green in the gills but towards the end of the trip I finally started getting my sea legs.

The rig was ~2/0 bait hook with about a 1’ leader where a large sinker (5 inch tear drop style) was attached to a swivel, and cut clams with a six inch plastic mojo was the bait.

We fished right off the bottom at about 300’, and all you had to do was sit and jig it vertically three or four feet every few seconds. The only downside to it all was that the captain didn’t teach us anything about what we’re doing. We all just had to kind of figure it out on our own, which I contribute to me only catching one fish. There were guys that were obvious seasoned deep sea fisherman that had non-stop action. Plus they were using a lure called a jake which seemed to be the ticket.

Anyways it was a fun trip, and now I can scratch that off my bucket list  My wife ended up winning the worst luck t-shirt since all she did the whole time was throw up. In the end I don’t know if I ever want to go on the ocean again, maybe not even on a cruise, but I did live and learn.

PS I plan on using some of the techniques I learned out there out on some of our utah lakes, i’m pretty sure they’ll work.

Good pic. Sorry to hear that you guys got sick. I had a similar experience in San Francisco.

I hope your wifes a good sport and tries it again. That did my wife in. Take seasick pills next time.

You can have your doctor prescribe some patches that you place behind your ear an hour before the trip. They are fairly inexpensive when compared to a bad trip on the water. When I think I might be on rough seas I always get them. It sucks to spend money on a deep sea trip only to have it spoiled because you spent the entire trip hanging over the rail so to speak. Just somthing to consider if you plan another trip. They work pretty well.

Good to see you caught a fish. I went fishing about 45 min off the coast of Maryland a few years ago. Went with my father-in-law and bro in law and we thought it was pretty fun hitting those big waves going full speed on the way out. Once the engine shut off I didn’t find it so fun. Let’s just say it took about 20 min to start “chumming” in the rough seas. The worst part was that with all of that fun we didn’t even catch anything. The captain felt so bad that he didn’t even charge us since we were supposed to go out earlier in the day when it was much calmer. I am hesitant to consider another sea adventure after that!

We took Dramamin and wore the pressure bracelets. I think the bracelets are a gimmick![:p]

I’m sure my wife isn’t ever going to go on the open seas ever again and it’s even questionable for me! I like Utah Lake a lot more, even though i’ve been sea sick on it too. Not to mention the waves could be compared do the ocean out there on a windy day[;)]

Pepcid AC and Bonine. Start taking them at the prescribed dosage and times at least 24 hours in advance and continue with that regiment while you’re out. Having regular antacids with you is also a good idea. In my experience, if you can prevent the acid up-well you can prevent what comes next. Raaaalph!

I actually went on a deep sea trip out of Ogunquit when I was 14. We caught Atlantic Cod, spiny dog fish, and an ugly burbotish thing called a cusk that would puke it’s stomach out of it’s mouth because of the pressure change. It definitely is a beautiful place, and the food was great. Sorry to hear you guys got sea sick, but I’m glad you caught one and I’m glad you posted this, it brought back some nice memories.
