My dad is coming from Colorado and I have not seen him for quite a while and would really like to take him out fishing and show him a great day in Utah and was thinking that the berry may be just the spot. I have been reading the posts so far on the Berry Ice off and am still a bit curious on how much open water there actually is. I have gathered that many people are in small areas competing for depth, are there areas that there is enough water for a small boat 14’?, or am I far too early? Any info would be great, PM if needed.
We were there yesterday. (monday) Saw two boats on the lake. One was at the ladders area as well as a few float tubers. And the other small boat was at Soldier Creek as well as a few guys in tubes there. More area at SC to fish in a boat. Was wishing I would have had my small boat when we saw how far the ice had receded. Ya take the boat. We had a pretty good open area where we were bank fishing until the wind blew a giant ice sheet and blocked off the spot. Went from 30ft open water to 3 ft[:p]
We drove all over and the only places for a small boat would be at the ladders or over on the Soldier Creek Side. But given todays temps and maybe some wind, things could be much different by Saturday.
By the way, the whole Bryant’s Fork/Renegade side was locked up tight. Mud Creek had a little open water but right at the ramp it was frozen.
Good Luck
Thanks
Go to Starvation. It will be worth the trip for you. Talk to Bassrods. He was up there recently, and it has been very very good. Thats my 2cents. Not much open water at Strawberry, but it has been good if you can find a spot to fish…
Drove past the Berry today on my way to vernal. Open water in Chicken Creek West about 100+ yards out. Ladders about 200 yards in spots or a little closer. There is a definite ring of water around the majority of the lake as i could see.
Lots of open water over on the Soldier Creek side near the Highway, didn’t have a chance to drive down by the dam or really off the highway.
Hope it helps. Plenty of people at 7:30 am though.
