Cutthroat or Rainbow

While fishing the Green River last week I pulled in this trout, assumed to be a rainbow, until I put the video in slow motion.

It’s spots and lack of pink lateral stripe make it look like a cutthroat.

Especially if you look at the picture of the rainbow trout caught earlier in the day.

What does everyone think?

Looked like a rainbow to me.

Rainbow.

Rainbow. Be thankful.

I would have guessed a cutbow, personally.

I would have guessed a cutbow, personally.

Why?

because of the white-tipped fins.

Oh, wait. That means it’s a rainbow.

OK – then because of the spots on the head.

Oh, wait. That means it’s a rainbow.

Then because of the pink stripe down the side.

Oh, wait…

Because cuttbows are magical.

When I look at that fish, I see hatchery rainbow through and through because of the dorsal fin. That fish is most likely not a wild fish at all. So, that eliminates the cuttbow thought.

Yep.

I know cuttbows can be created in hatcheries, but really, how often do they occur in the wild?

In Utah, not very often. We have some hybridization in some streams, and I know Kolob Reservoir has some hybridization. But, most of our reservoirs don’t get any natural reproduction.

I think I saw it dripping. Obviously a rainthroat.

nice little bow…great colors.

That’s a rainbow with a preference for New Zealand mudsnails. Dark colored rainbows have literally always had those snails in their stomach whenever I’ve seen them.
