Crappie

Anyone catching crappie in northern utah? If so where.

Crappie fishing has been pretty crappie for me lately. I have fished for them at UT lake in places that worked for me before and I fished some of the crappiest looking water I have have ever seen at East Canyon the other day and NADA! No Crappie for me.

I have the day odd tomorrow and I am going to hit pineview to see if I can find them.

I saw one caught at pineview 3 weeks ago. I fished for them over the fourth weekend with out anything. I know they are in there and in willard, but they don’t seem to like me. Trout fishing is what I know and do the most of, so maybe I should stick to them.

Thanks for the info!

If it’s crappie your after I would have to say Newton is your best bet. They won’t be much as far as size but you will catch alot. Plus even the small one fillet easy.

Crappie are my favorite fish, I loe to catch them, I love to eat them. I wish every lake in UT had some. Oh well.

I fished Pineview this spring with good luck after some location pointers from a BFT’r. I did ood a few weeks later on U lake. Willard has been a bust for me and even though I have heard they are in East Canyon I have never caught one there. When I go to Powell I aways manage some, but that is Powell and it is 6 hrs and $80 each way.

I really wish the UT DWR would realise that they have more warm water fisheries han cold water fisheries start stocking things like 9 mo old crappie, bass, walleye and Pike.

I have never fished Newton, not sure where it is, past Mantua somewhere, I’d guess. I have been sticking as close as I can to SLC to save on gas.

They are by far the best fish to catch and eat! I am with you man! Where are you from? Most Westerners are not crappie lovers.

Thanks for all the help!!! I’ll give newton a try. will a tube work and what would you recommend to use? I loved catching crappie in Kentucky when I was there. I’ve heard that Holmes creek res, by valley view golf course, has crappie but with all the vegetation, it’s hard to fish. I wish I could get a tube out on that pond.

I agree there are alot of waters for cappie, I don’t know why they aren’t stocked.

I’m with you guys. Crappie are my favorite fish to catch and to eat. One really good place to catch them is Saratoga Springs marina at Utah Lake. You have to fish it from a boat, because the marina is private. There are lots of small crappie and you can find some bigger ones out toward the lake and over at the pumphouse. My relatives call them sac-a-lait, or sack of milk. That’s what the Cajun’s call them in Louisiana.

I was raised back east, we had lots of Crappie lakes.
Pineview has some great fish, but in summer there is a lot of traffic that makes them hard to find and catch.
Utah lake is good, the North end is where I do best, but I won’t eat the fish from there.
I have heard East Canyon has them, is that true?

A tube would work great at Newton. I have a 14 foot aluminum boat and sometimes it would be nice to have something smaller the get into some places.

Newton is in Cache Valley so it is a ways from SLC. I can understand about the gas situation it has kept me home more than once this year. But if you like crappie it’s almost a guarantee during the summer.

East Canyon does indeed have Crappie. We have caught some nice ones out of there using small tube jigs & crawdaddy Smelly Jelly. Here is a pic of my buddy with a couple of the bigger ones that we caught. We went up there earlier this season, however the water was still too cold for any action.

Nice Pic, that’s what I’m talkin about. East has the habitat, this should be a banner year class for just about all the brush spawners. here is so much flooded brush right now, and it is full of 3/4" minnows. I just need to get after it up there. I can’t seem to keep the pesky smallmouth bass off long enough to get a crappie.

Now those are the size"paper lips" i’ve been looking for. I’ve never fished EC before…looks like it would be the place to try for crappie. Thanks for the picts.

Why won’t you eat a fish from Utah Lake ??? I would rather eat one from Utah Lake than Bear Lake !!! just because it looks dirty does not mean it is !! Over all it is a pretty clean lake biologiclly speaking. Nothing wrong with fish from Utah Lake, unless you are worried about growing a third eye like TD.

I don’t think troll is worried about the muddy water but the mercury could be a problem, if you eat fish from there more than once a week you could get poisoned[frown]. WH2

:sunglasses:No mercury problems in Utah Lake.

Carp and catfish have “elevated” levels of PCBs that have created warnings, but all other species are well within safe levels for all potentially hazardous elements.

On the other hand, Jordanelle DOES have mercury warnings for perch and brown trout, but because it looks clear and clean, nobody worries about it much.

So far as EC goes, the fishing was terrible in general in the lake arms about 3 weeks ago because the lake was turning over. It is finally clearing up and I am here to tell you that the crappie fishing at EC is good if you know where to find them and how to present to them. I met a fishing buddy up there last monday and we caught about 8 and missed at least 40. They were barely tapping our jig and float combos. They only hit the shallows in the cove arms during low light periods and throughout the night this time of year so I wish I had a boat to get to the fish that are over the channels and main lake points during the day. Got out in a raft with a friend last summer about this time and caught one every 15 min. or so during the day and slayed them at sunset. I’m posting this because most of the crappie I have been catching at EC this year are pretty small and I believe that you BFT’rs could help me thin them out so they are bigger on the average. Don’t get me wrong though, there are still some pigs in there, but I usually get more of them in the fall when the lake and the boat traffic is down.

There are a lot of waters I won’t eat fish from.
The crappie I want to eat aare 9" or so longer, a 3-5 year old fish, 3-5 in UT lake is enough to pick up bad things.
East Canyon is much cleaner in all ways than Ut Lake. Pineview too.
Call me paranoid, you are welcome to come over anytime I fish UT Lake and I will donate anything I caught to you.

To the guy who wants to fish the channel. Let me know. I have 2 kayaks, a pontoon, a tube and a 19’ motor boat. You point where to go and catch some crappies and I’ll get us there.

" I would rather eat one from Utah Lake than Bear Lake !!!"

Thats pretty funny…
