I see Utah has new corny regulations for 2017
So does corn work for carp? Been trying to get them to take dough balls without any luck… Can’t even get them to take worms lately… I need some cat bait and they know it… Maybe next year the corn will do the trick… Later J
**Corn is one of the best baits ever for carp. Just use the whole kernel…not the creamed.
Actually, you can use the canned or frozen. It has been banned in Utah by the trout huggers because it is very effective on trout…but has the potential of being overused by chummers.
I have been lobbying to get corn approved for non trout waters for years…just so it is easier to catch carp…especially for kids.
Can’t believe they left Willard Bay off the list. Must be because of all the trout that wash down the Weber and Ogden Rivers into Willard. You know, the ones that live until June when the water temps reach 80…or until a tiger muskie gets them first.

Thanks Pat, been in Utah forever so never been able to use corn that I can remember. Good to know it will be useful for carp next summer. I was surprised Cutler made the list and shocked Willard didn’t. But sounds like it might go further if people don’t screw it up. Later J
I’m more shocked Strawberry, Jordanelle, and Starvation aren’t on the list but Fish Lake is?
**I kinda suspect that the new regulation was slapped in without a couple of years study and codgertation. I further suspect that the kokanee kooks had more to do with it than carp chasers. There will likely be additions and/or deletions as the program evolves and generates interest, use and input.
I do applaud their recent visible effort to show some progressive thinking. We have new species in new waters to anticipate. And now the ages old bugaboo about corn as bait has been struck down, at least on some waters. Still some of the regulations that need further definition and better interpretation but lots of improvements.

**I have long held the theory that any question that begins with the word WHY…and it has to do with people…is not likely to have a good answer. Substitute DWR for “people”. **
I hail more from the kook camp than the chaser camp, and it makes even less sense no matter how I play it out in my tiny little brain.
I can partially understand Starv and Jordy being left off the list due to the size of the current kokes, but Strawberry, someone PLEASE explain?
I,like you, whole heartedly APPLAUD the DWR for this move. Thank you DWR!!
This enlightened thinking by the DWR actually gives me a small shimmer of hope on a different subject:
Yep, you guessed it, the use of certified disease free live minnows…

**Yeah, right. Next you’re gonna want world peace and an end to hunger and disease.
Come to think of it, those things might come to pass before we get to use live minnows in Utah.

If you are going to try corn, I would go to a local feed store and get some shelled corn, like they feed cattle. Get a big pot, put the corn, a couple of cups of sugar, and cover with water. bring to a boil then simmer till it starts to pop ( hull comes off) Cool and keep in the water to keep moist. There are several different rigs that are effective, but a hair rig is one of the best. Google it or go to some of the European /English fishing sites to get directions on how to rig it !!
You mean barbeque flavored corn nut might not work? [:)]

**I do not use corn. My sole reason for trying to get DWR to relax the regs was to open up the use of corn for carp…on non-trout lakes. And, again, not for my benefit but for the increasing number of anglers who specifically fish for them. Corn is easy to use, cheap and effective.
I seriously doubt that anyone who wants to use corn would consider going to all that trouble…as you suggest. Much easier to buy a can of “Niblets hackle” at the store and hit the water.
I have read a lot, both in books and online, about the exotic recipes and fishing techniques used by European carpologists. Some of those things seem borderline absurd. But if they catch fish and win tournaments in the waters involved then go for it. I suspect our Utah fish would die laughing if we presented them with that foo foo stuff. Hey, maybe that could be a solution to the carp problem. Make them laugh themselves to death.

You could use corn on the WY. side of Flaming gorge this year I never tried it and have not heard if it worked for Kokanee
with Flaming Gorge Reservoir being on the list next year I my try it.
Berkeley Gulp Maggots has worked good for me.
will need to take the corn of the boat when I go to strawberry.

That would be a good way to get a ticket as Strawberry is NOT on the list…yet. I like seeing Deer Creek on there though…don’t tell anyone but I know who’s been buying those dusty buckets of corn scented Powerbait and using it with some success…
Still waiting for a certain Jordanelle bassfisherman to weight in on the changes there…
yeah removing that “one over 12 inches” stipulation is brilliant. now all the 14’s-15’s are gonna hit the fying pan

They are getting rid of the bigger fish so that the tigers and wipers will have more food to grow on.
