At the last minute i got a call for an inspection in Logan and decided to take my son to BL while so close to try and get him into some cisco for the first time. Against my better judgment of leaving so late in the day and a chance of bad roads, we left at 12:30. The roads were pretty good most of the way to Logan and onto Garden City and only a few icy patches above logan on the corners. We got to the east side around 3:20 and it was calm as the wind was still coming from the east. 1 guy and a warden were there but didn’t look like they were moving much. We got out and dressed and headed down to the water. 7* and a slight breeze but it was still cold. We found all the rocks to be covered in ice and very slick right next to the water. Cisco were everywhere. I set Gage up on a boulder with the net over top like a teter totter(SP). That worked out pretty good. He caught several by himslef! I told him to push down on the handle when the fish swam over the net. He was having a good time. He got about 12 and then got a little cold so i helped him get the rest. After we got his i went after mine. It took me only about 10 minutes to get 30. Total time from the first dip to the last was 32 minutes! Pretty good and quick. Lots of cisco everywhere.
Brody, you never cease to amaze me – even the cisco come running (I suppose more correctly swimming) when you show up[;)]. I bet Gage had a great time.
They were in pretty thick again this morning and everyone I checked limited out in about 15-20 minutes. The run has maintained itself throughout the day, but as the run winds down the mornings will be better. It was very cold (-11) this morning and there was a lot of slush but there were a lot of people out and everyone was happy even though it was so cold. Not sure if the run will last through this coming weekend. Boat anglers are still kicking butt and are taking limits in about 45min. off the rockpile.
We ate about 20 last night. It took my wife 20 minutes to get over the fact they are pretty much still whole. Once she took a bit she liked it. My daughter loved it! We are eating more tonight. I will be back up hopefully friday to get some more. The wife wants to try it after she ate some.
Anybody have a recent update one the run? I assume they are still in there! Thanks
how do you prepare and cook cisco? And what do they taste like? I saw one of those cisco disco specials when Doug Miller used to do a show on them but they just showed catching them.
how do you cook them the best and are they a fishy tasting fish like trout or white fish like catfish or something?
I think there is a thread on cooking them a page or 2 down. I just cut off the head, slice the gut and use your thumb to get out the small amount in there, run your knife across the scales to remove them, and rinse with cold water. I just flowered them and added a little lemon pepper and garlic and deep fried them for 4 minutes at 350*. Dip in tartar sauce and enjoy. They are white flesh and very delicate tasting. If you like kipper snacks, you will love cisco.
