Cat-Tastic at Willard 6/29/09

:sunglasses:Met up with Wildcat94 at the south marina about 6 AM to deliver his tricked out toon. Won’t see a toon on top of my Jimmy very often.

Since we were there, with tackle and bait, we decided to go fishing too. Good move. Air temp 60 and water temp 69 at launch…warming to 74 by 2 PM when we departed. Calm and sunny. My kinda day.

**Dragged a minnow on one rod while throwing cranks and plastics with the other. Caught my first of MANY cats while still going out of the channel. Tried around the north point with a crankbait and got a couple of jumps out of a feisty smallmouth before he let me have my lure back. About 16 inches. Nothing else on lures there or out further. **

Wildcat94 was motoring around in his toon, trying to find a wiper or walleye. Nada in either department for him today. Up until noon, we had both had and lost one wiper…along with all the cats we caught.

I kicked my tube down off the feed lot and found an area that was INFESTED with catfish. Went through almost two bags (long dozen) minnows without missing many hits. Also caught about a dozen “cookie cutter” size kitties on small white plastics. Total cats molested had to be somewhere around 30. Not wipers but not skunk either. And, they eat good.

On the way back inside the channel I was using one of my last couple of minnows. POW! ZING! Wiper. Not huge, maybe 16 or 17 inches. But, a wiper every inch. They sure pull good.

**We both brought in a basket of kitties and hit the cleaning station. Couldn’t believe it. 2 PM and it was dry. Lots of boats out today but nobody cleaning fish. **

Didn’t see any of the boaters catch anything. But, did have a couple come roaring right over top of me when a bunch of seagulls from the feed lot settled on the water. The yoyos in the boats thought I had a boil working and wanted to give me some help. Also had a troller run right over my lines. He just glared at me like I was crowding him off the lake.

**Oh well, we had our fun. **

We had some fun the other day out from the feed lot, by throwing some bread from our sub sandwiches in the water while trolling at 3.25 MPH, the gulls went nuts and started diving toward the bread crumb trail we had left. One boat came sailing over looking for a wiper boil but alas it was for not as he saw what was driving them crazy, a chuckle could be heard from my daughter and my wife.[:p]

:sunglasses:**I have had several “friendly” encounters with boaters…not even including the colonel. One of my favorites was last year when the carp were starting to get frisky. I was casting along the exposed mud and gravel bar out from the campground and a group of carp began really thrashing up a storm. A boat cruising by spotted the action and assumed that I was fishing a boil and slammed the throttle forward and just about hit me as they moved in between me and the “wiper boil”. When they discovered their wipers were the golden kind they sneaked back out of there…a bit embarassed. There have been plenty of other times that unsportsmanlike boaters have put down schools of REAL wipers I have been working on. **

By the way, do you know if it is illegal to chum for gulls?

I was out there for a couple hours not bites but did see part of the ski boat slalom course LOL

:sunglasses:I thought I felt an evil presence upon the waters.

Why didn’t you holler and wave? I would have waved back…but probably wouldn’t have used all my fingers.

There is one thing missing on that toon … registration numbers !!! I have decided to forgo the motor on mine as I can’t figure out a way to attach the needed numerology and registration sticker. Oars and fins do just as well, then I can carry more tackle inplace of the battery/motor.

:sunglasses:It is registered. Numbers are just under the pocket on the right side of the toon.

Another great report accompanied by pictures telling a significant part of the story. I wish I had been with you. I can tell that you had a great time!

:sunglasses:Well, as we both know you were given an invitation to join us. But, since you don’t always check your emails and PMs in a timely fashion…and because you allowed necessary household duties to interfere with your fishing schedule…

Would it make you feel any better to know that as I was releasing the umpteenth cookie I was thinking “Too bad Lloyd is not here to enjoy this.”? I know how much you and your wife like eating those tasty little kitties from Willard Bay, so I will also think of you as I dine royally on them tonight.

I wonder if those idiots realize that the mad dash with the motor will spook the fish and shut down the boil? I’ve gotta hand it to you TD, it takes dedication to tube in open water way off shore and put up with the power squadron.

:sunglasses:**Thanks, but I seldom tube very far away from the shoreline. Most of the best fishing is in close. **

You are right about the boats spooking the fish. They have killed several good boils for me and not got anything for themselves either. Apologize? Yeah, just like Osama Bin Laden did for 911.

I have a bunch of pictures in my archives of boats…including other fishermen…running right between me and the shoreline I am fishing…within a few yards. No sportsmanship at all.

I doubt if you will see the Col. out there any more I heard he is getting pretty limited to what he can do. The wife sees him come into the Base Commisary once in awhile with his wife and said he can hardly get around. Sorry to see that as I have guided him on some cow elk hunts in the past and went on a couple goose hunts with him and he really wasn’t such a bad guy.

:sunglasses:Sorry to hear that. I joke about him and his “fly bys” but he is pretty harmless. Always sad to see an old fisherman slowed down by the ravages of age and life. Hope he can still get out some more. It would not be a life worth living for me if I could no longer wet a line.

Need surface to surface anti boat cannon :sunglasses:
