bugs & bites

Anybody have any good ideas about what to use to keep the bugs, mosquitos, no-see-ums, etc, from ruining an otherwise good fishing trip. Haven’t had much luck with the commercial fly dope products…what do you use that works?

Well Jerry

Coming from the “land down under”, and a place that has more biting bugs and no see um’s ( I like that word) than I care to mention, we have a poultice of sprays, wipe on’s, burning things etc.

We also have plenty of “big see um’s” as well. Skeeta’s the size of small light planes and a bite that can cause nasty welts.

Problem is that most of the commercial goo contains an active ingrediant called DEET. I won’t bother spelling because it’s about 6 mile long.

It can be nasty stuff if used for long periods and we have one brand here that has so much DEET in it that it can almost be used as paint stripper on the side (I kid you not).

One of the best ones here uses a mix of tea tree oil and natural pyrethrins (anti bug off extract) that comes from a plant we have here. Does a great job and especially on sand flies which we get a lot of in the tropics.

Great for kids as well. What do other anglers use?

My dad used to wash his hands, wrists & neck with a solution of turpentine, vinegar & water…he was absolutely bug-free, even in the thick of the worst swarms…plus he smoked evil smellin cigars & I guess that helped. Dunno if the game is worth the candle, when it comes to dousing yourself with that nasty sort of brew…sure works though.

I heard that eating garlic (a lot of it) helps to keep them away? Does anyone know of this to be true?
