Bear Lake Report for Friday, January 25 and for the weekend of Jan 26-27. The ice at Cisco Beach 2.5" thick anglers were able to dipnet cisco through the ice. The run is winding down but there were plenty of cisco this morning. With the run slowing down, it is important to be there early. The cisco really dissapate by 9:00am. After No cisco to speak of off the Bear Lake State Park marina due to low water levels, so your best bet for dip netting cisco will be at Cisco Beach.
Ice anglers have been fishing off of many parts of the lake and ice thickness ranges from about 3-5" in most parts of the lake. Popular spots have been at the pumphouse in the southeast area of the lake, off the weedbed south of Gus Rich Point and off Garden City at 150 South Street. The city has plowed a lane down to the beach in that location. Be extremely careful when venturing out into unknown areas without other anglers around. Ideal Beach Resort is allowing angler access through their gate @ $2/person and have plowed out a parking lot at the lake shore. Their hours of operation are 9am-5pm. Do not lift the gate or put down boards to cross into Ideal Beach Resort before 9am or tresspassing tickets will be issued! Cutthroat trout and whitefish fishing have been good over areas with weedbeds in 20-30 feet of water and then deeper for cutthroat and lake trout over areas 60-90 feet deep. Use small jigs or small castmasters tipped with worms or salmon eggs for the whitefish. Use 4-5" tube jigs tipped with cisco meat for the cutthroat and lake trout. Fishing regulation changes for 2008 include recognizing both Utah and Idaho licenses and the respective state’s second pole permits on either side of the lake. What this means is that either a Utah or Idaho license holder can fish on either side of the lake. In addition if an angler also has purchased a second pole permit (two pole permit) then you can fish with two poles on either side of the state line too.
