Battery system upgrade

lets see, if you take a design simmilar to a weed wacker, a titainium shaft and on top an altranator, well I need say more?..

well there goes another multi-million dollar idea that I will never see a dime out of… hope your happy..:laughing::laughing:

LOL, na, i’m really not pulling that much power with what i’m running. All i’ve got hooked up is a Sonar and a VHF, bilge pump, console lights, and 2 spotting lights; that’s it. Then of course the motor for cranking. I rarely need the bilge and i’ve never used the spotting or console lights. I may not even need two batteries, but I figure what the hell. My GPS isn’t wired in since it’s a hand held unit and I just drop some AA’s in it and call it a day. I don’t have a regular FM radio (yet), so no juice there. Infact, compared to many vessels that fish like I do, my boat is pretty under-electroniced. Most boats are equiped with the FM radio, duel high-speed feed live wells, Radar, some have duel sonar units, and other eminities like an enclosed cab with AC, microwave, ect… You can get alot of crap on the Center consoles and cuddy cabins of today. But, the old Osprey does the job. :sunglasses:

I just had to replace my truck battery yesterday..

two days of -10* temps killed it dead, would not event take a charge… I bairly got enough charge in to it to get it started to drive streight to the auto part store to get me a new battery.. soon as I turned the truck off the battery was dead again..

theres nothing worse than running on a week or dead battery, it only leads to headaches…

and now with the price of gas, its hardly unjustifiable to run on an old battery when one tank of gas cost more than a new battery…[pirate] never thought I would see that day…[crazy]

I think i’ve decided on what equipment i’m going to use for my battery system upgrade. First of all, after doing quite a bit of research, i’m going with the Minn Kota MK210. It not only has all the features I wanted, but it also has the best warranty and price. (3 year warranty at 109.00 dollars)

Next, i’m going with the Perko duel battery switch. This will allow me to pick which batteries I want to use, or run both in parallel. Which ever battery(s) are selected on are also charged by the motors alternator. This runs 29.99.

Lastly, i’ve decided to keep the old battery in tact for my accesory battery, and purchase a new batter as my cranking battery. After pricing other deep cycle batteries, the optima isn’t that much more. So, i’ll probably go with a single Optima deep cycle, the biggest one, for a little over 200.00 bucks. That should set me up perfectly for plenty of cold-natured 2 stroke cranking power and eliminate any worry I have about the boat not cranking due to a dead battery. Now I just have to save up the cheddar and make it happen.

OK, I have finally purchased my supplies for the battery upgrade project. I varied off my previous post just a tad. I did purchase the Minn Kota MK210. I was really surprised how freaking heavy the unit is, but, it is what it is. Next, I purchased a Guest two way battery switch from Bass Pro. I got the charger from Walmart for 99.95. I saved 10 bucks on top of not having to pay shipping charges. Nextly, i’m taking some friendly advice and purchasing a marine battery from walmart and calling it a day. 79.95 is a damn good price for a battery that they’ll replace, no questions asked, for 18 months. Either way, the battery might mysteriously “go bad” very close to the 18 month mark. LOL Then again, at that price, I may go ahead and purchase two and replace the old battery that is currently in place. A battery is always a good investment.

I plan to start the project this weekend. I’ll take photo’s as I go and upload them onto the internet for a step by step kinda deal. I think the rewireing thing I did like that turned out pretty good, this should be no different. Thanks for the advice and insights guys! You all saved me a lot of money. :sunglasses:
